Area Roundup: Grantham scores four goals to lift Granite Hills past Silverado

Granite Hills’ Samantha Grantham has been on a tear recently.

The senior striker scored four goals Friday night to lead the Granite Hills girls soccer team to an 8-1 victory over Silverado.

Grantham, who will continue playing soccer at the Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, also assisted on another goal in the victory.

Grantham is up to 18 goals on the season through 11 games.

In the victory over the Hawks, Makenzie Bohn also scored two goals, and Lianna Tsabur and Cali Hitt each scored one. Julia Alvarado and Sophia Toranzo each had two assists.

Analiese Castel made three saves in goal.

Castel also recorded five saves in the Desert Sky League opener Jan. 4 against Barstow. Granite Hills won 2-1 as Grantham scored both the goals. Islet Montez had an assist.

The Cougars (5-6-1, 2-0 DSL) hosts Adelanto on Wednesday.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Hesperia Christian 66, University Prep 41

At Hesperia, three players recorded double-doubles to lead the Patriots past the Jaguars on Friday night.

Jared Bragg led the way with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists; Cody New snagged 15 rebounds with 14 points; and Arlan Koester added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Hesperia Christian (6-4, 4-2 Cross Valley League) is back in action Monday at Littlerock.

Hesperia Christian 61, CIMS 37

At Victorville, Cody New dropped 26 points and snagged 10 rebounds as the Patriots beat the Cougars by 24 points on Jan. 4.

Two other players recorded double-doubles for Hesperia Christian. Arlan Koester scored 16 points with 11 rebounds, and Jared Bragg had a team-high 13 rebounds with 11 points.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hesperia Christian 42, University Prep 20

At Hesperia, the Patriots improved to 5-1 in Cross Valley League action with a victory over the Jaguars on Friday night.

Peyton Houlemard led the way for Hesperia Christian with 18 points, and Kailey New added nine points with 17 rebounds.

The Patriots (10-4) are back in action Monday against Calvary Baptist.

Hesperia Christian 45, CIMS 37

At Hesperia, the Patriots improved to 4-1 in Cross Valley League action with a victory over the Cougars on Jan. 4.

Peyton Houlemard led the way with 20 points; Kailey New added 12 points and nine rebounds; and Grace Audet snagged seven rebounds.

Apple Valley 43, Sultana 25

At Apple Valley, Lizzie Searls led the Sun Devils with 13 points in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

Danielle Taylor tallied a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

PREP BOYS SOCCER

Granite Hills 1, Silverado 1

At Apple Valley, Cesar Sainz scored on an assist from Zane Rocca in the second half, giving the Cougars a tie with the Hawks.

Aden Gallegos made one save in goal as the Hawks fired 10 shots.

Silverado jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Gabriel Tafoya.

The teams played to two draws last season, but it was Silverado that captured the Desert Sky League crown. Silverado hosts Granite Hills on Jan. 25.

The Cougars (4-10-2, 1-0-1 DSL) are back in action Wednesday and head to Adelanto. The Hawks (5-12-2, 0-1-1 DSL) are off until Jan. 13, when they also travel to Adelanto.

Hesperia 3, Serrano 1

At Hesperia, Jared Miranda, Julian Orozco and Chris Palacios each scored a goal as the Scorpions beat the Diamondbacks for their first victory in Mojave River League action on Jan. 5.

Brandon Zavala and Memo Ramirez each had an assist for Hesperia.

Serrano scored its lone goal in the second half. Mando Espinosa headed in a corner kick from Nate Munoz.

Serrano (5-7-3, 1-1 MRL)  is back in action Tuesday against Apple Valley, while Hesperia (7-6-3, 1-0-1 MRL) hosts Burroughs.

Oak Hills 2, Apple Valley 1

At Apple Valley, Alex Rodriguez and Julian Alvarez each scored goals as the Bulldogs topped the Sun Devils in Mojave River League action on Jan. 5.

Anderson Lemus and Nick Rodriguez each had an assist.

Oak Hills (7-5-3, 1-0-1 MRL) is back in action Tuesday against Sultana, while Apple Valley heads to Serrano.

Hesperia 3, Oak Hills 3

At Oak Hills, the Scorpions and Bulldogs played to a draw in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

D’Angelo Martinez and Josiah Miramontes scored on assists from Anderson Lemus and Julian Alvarez for Oak Hills. Raul Becerra scored the team’s other goal on a penalty kick.

For Hesperia, Julian Orozco, Josue Canas and Memo Ramirez each scored a goal. Orozco, Chris Palacios and Nate Sanchez each had an assist.

Serrano 4, Burroughs 1

At Phelan, the Diamondbacks kicked off Mojave River League action with a victory over the Burros on Jan. 3.

Nate Munoz and Henry Ramirez scored on goals from Joshua Martin and Travis Hernandez in the first half.

Burroughs cut the lead to a goal with a penalty kick in the second half.

Serrano upped the lead back to two goals after Mando Espinosa scored on a corner kick from Ramirez, followed by a goal from Anthony Potter.

Serrano (5-6-3, 1-0 MRL) heads to Hesperia on Thursday.

Apple Valley 1, Sultana 1

At Hesperia, the Sun Devils and Sultans played to a draw in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

Nathaniel Guzman scored Sultana’s goal on an assist from fellow freshmen Chris Echeverria in the second half.

Apple Valley also scored its goal in the second half.

The Sun Devils (4-5-1, 0-0-1 MRL) host Oak Hills on Thursday, while the Sultans (8-5-6, 0-0-1 MRL) head to Burroughs.

Granite Hills 5, Barstow 2

At Apple Valley, Eric Aspiro scored twice to lead the Cougars past the Aztecs in the Desert Sky League opener on Jan. 4.

Cesar Sainz also added a goal with an assist; Kade Casarez and Nate Rodriguez each scored a goal; and Erick Valdovinos and Oscar Mendoza both had two assists.

Jaylen Diaz scored both goals in the victory on assists from Kaylee Davis and Yadira Sanchez

Diaz also scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Burroughs on Tuesday. Mariah Kavanaugh assisted on both the goals, and Munoz also made two saves.

Serrano (5-6-1, 2-0 MRL) is back in action Tuesday on the road against Apple Valley.

Oak Hills 6, Hesperia 0

At Hesperia, Sydney Middaugh scored two goals and assisted on two more as the Bulldogs blanked the Scorpions in the Mojave River League opener on Jan. 3.

Alyssa Vernon, Mollie Zielke and Caimbria Lawson-Kitchen scored goals for Oak Hills. Vernon also had an assist, along with Takoah Castillo, Ava Bohlster-Hunter and Elizabeth Quiran

Kendall Ness and Ilyanna Stocker split time as goalkeeper and each made a save.
