COLLEGE WOMEN’S SOCCER

Oak Hills grad Nugent heading to Sam Houston State University

After spending four years at Prairie View A&M University, Oak Hills graduate Andrea Nugent will attend Sam Houston State University next year, where she will study for her Master’s degree with two seasons of eligibility left.

Over four seasons playing for the Panthers, she earned two Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year awards.

As a freshman in 2019, Nugent started in 16 games, and earned the honor. She started in all 19 games during the 2021 season, scoring four goals with four assists.

Nugent appeared in just two games this season, and in those four seasons with the Panthers scored six total goals.

Nugent graduated from Oak Hills in 2019 and helped the Bulldogs to the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 title.

Nugent scored just three goals her senior year for the Bulldogs, with seven assists, but was the defensive backbone for a team that allowed just 17 goals in 28 games, with 15 shutouts. Oak Hills only allowed three goals in a game once, and two goals in two games.

Once at SHSU, Nugent will play under head coach Sonia Curvelo, who previously coached at Prairie View A&M.

“I had an opportunity to coach her for three seasons,” Curvelo said in a statement. “She helped the program capture its first conference championship in program history and wants to continue that success here at Sam Houston while studying for her master’s.

“She knows what it takes to win championships. Her commitment to training and motivating her teammates is top level. She is a true leader and a player that you want on your team. Even though she is a defender on the field, she is very capable of scoring goals in any given game.”
