Area Roundup: Hesperia Christian's Jared Bragg named Agape League MVP

Hesperia Christian’s Jared Bragg was recently named the Agape League’s Most Valuable Player award recipient.

Bragg led the team to an 8-3 record. He completed 66 passes for 1,384 yards and 23 touchdowns while scrambling for 387 yards and six scores.

Four Hesperia Christian players received First Team nods on offense and three more on defense.

The Patriots’ season came to an end in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Div. 2 playoffs with a 43-42 loss to Coast Union last week.

ACE’s Preston Marshall and Austin Dashiell were named the league’s offense and defensive player of the year, respectively.

At Fontana, the Scorpions topped the Hawks in the championship game at the Jurupa Hills Spartan Extravaganza on Saturday.

Hesperia (4-1) is back in action Friday against Damien, which according to MaxPreps.com, is the top-ranked team in the state.

Excelsior 53, Boron 37

At Boron, Darryl Stoudemire celebrated his first game as the Eagles head coach with a victory on the road Monday night.

The Eagles iced the game by going on a 30-5 run in the second half after leading by a point at halftime.

Kaleb Watson led the way for Excelsior with 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists; Robert Moreo scored 10 points with three assists; and Carter Oerman snagged 16 rebounds and blocked four shots.

The Eagles are back in action Friday night against Granite Hills, where Stoudemire coached for the 2019-20 season.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hesperia 60, Eisenhower 51

At Burbank, the Scorpions improved to 4-1 on the season with a victory over the Eagles on Monday.

Kylee Edgar led the way for Hesperia with 19 points, and Queen Allah added 13 points.

I loved the way the girls played tonight,” Hesperia head coach Michael Foreman said. “We have embraced getting better at the little things and improving at every opportunity.”

At La Verne, the Patriots improved to 2-3 on the season with a victory in the opener of the Calvary Baptist's Cougar Classic Tournament.

Grace Audet scored a team-high 17 points, and Heather MacDonald added six points.

Hesperia Christian is back in action Wednesday against Lake Arrowhead Christian.

PREP BOYS SOCCER

Victor Valley 5, Big Bear 0

At Victorville, Jonathan Guzman scored a hat trick with an assist as the Jackrabbits blanked the Bears in nonleague action Monday afternoon.

Guzman scored two goals in the first half and then six minutes in the second half. He also assisted on Juan Villalvazo’s goal two minutes into the game.

“As a freshman, Guzman has great prospects for growth in this game,” said head coach Fidel Gonzales. “He's humble, crafty, professional, and gifted. And he's got the grades for virtually any high-level college program requires of an attacking midfielder who lands shots on frame comfortably from 30-yards out.”

Bryan Solis scored a goal with an assist, and Edgar Ramos and Heriberto Villegas each recorded an assist.

The Jackrabbits (2-0) are back in action Wednesday against Riverside Prep.

AAE 1, ACE 0

At Helendale, Alijah Selvin scored a goal to lead the Knights past the Eagles in the season opener Monday.

Logan Willis assisted on the goal, and Roman Barron recorded six saves in goal.

AAE is back in action Wednesday against Silver Valley.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

Serrano 4, Barstow 3

At Barstow, the Diamondbacks kicked off the season with a victory on the road against the Aztecs on Monday.

Janice Vasquez led the way for Serrano with two goals; Jasmine Cordero scored a goal with an assist; Isabella Mondragon scored a goal; Mariah Kavanaugh, Kaylee Davis, and Kendall Toledo each recorded an assist; and Ryan Munoz logged five saves in goal.

The Diamondbacks are back in action Thursday at home against Adelanto.

PREP WRESTLING

Sultana’s Garcia takes 2nd at Carter Classic tourney

At Rialto, Mia Garcia took second place in the 170-pound division at the Carter Classic Varsity Girls Tournament on Saturday.

Alyssa Munoz finished fourth at 143 pounds, Estella Wade (121) and Makani Robertson (101) each took seventh in their classes, and Lilian Jara finished eighth at 111 pounds.

Sultana is in action Friday at the Carter Duals.
