Area Roundup: Hesperia girls hoops takes the crown at the Serrano Holiday Classic

The Hesperia girls basketball team ended 2021 with a bang.

The Scorpions dominated in the Serrano Holiday Classic tournament by scoring 250 total points over three games, while allowing just 61.

Kylee Edgar was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She led Hesperia past Heritage in the championship game Thursday afternoon by scoring 20 points to go along with 14 rebounds and four assists in a 72-20 victory.

Three other players scored in double digits.

Berlyn Miramontes scored 16 points, Liz Sanchez added 11 points and Queen Allah scored 10 points.

Savannah Wynn filled the stat sheet by scoring seven points with 15 rebounds, six assists, four steals and two blocks. Wynn earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

Wynn led the way for Serrano with 29 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and four steals in an 88-29 victory over Carter on Wednesday.

Allah added 19 points, and Edgar scored 17 points with eight rebounds, three steals and an assist.

Allah dropped 26 points in Monday’s 90-12 victory over Palmdale.

Hesperia (10-2) kicks off Mojave River League action against Oak Hills on Wednesday.

Barstow also competed in the tournament and took third place with a 63-17 victory over Carter on Thursday.

Reiven Ili led the way with 19 points, and Nyonna Russell added six points. Russell earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Rancho Cucamonga 76, Oak Hills 54

At La Verne, the Bulldogs reached the silver division’s semifinals at the Classic at Damien.

Michael Miller led the way for Oak Hills with 22 points, Semaj Blocker added 14 points and Joseph Lucas scored 10 points in the loss.

Oak Hills ended the tournament with a 2-1 record and did not compete on the final day of the tournament.

Miller also led the way for the Bulldogs in a 75-72 victory over La Mirada in the opener on Monday. Blocker scored 14 points.

Oak Hills topped Diamond Bar 69-52 on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (10-5) are back in action Wednesday in the Mojave River League opener at Hesperia, which also competed in the tournament.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Apple Valley 52, Firebaugh 26

At Anaheim, the Sun Devils picked up a second victory in the Savanna Holiday Classic tournament on Tuesday.

Simran Ahluwalia led the way with 20 points, and Madison Garcia added 11 points and eight steals.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

At Loma Linda, AAE took third place in the Jerry Lyle Pettis Memorial Tournament with 2-0 victory over Twentynine Palms.

Cynthia Valenzuela and Brooke Ebright each scored a goal in the victory. Ebright assisted on Valenzuela’s goal.

The Knights lost the first game of a double-header Wednesday. Aquinas topped AAE 0-2 as goalkeeper Kaydence Langley made 15 saves in net.

AAE then topped Banning 4-2 in penalty kicks after ending regulation tied 2-2.

Anahi Duron and Abbey Gremer each scored a goal, Ebright also had an assist and Langley made 10 saves and blocked two kicks in the penalty shootout.

AAE (5-4, 0-1 Cross Valley League) is back in action Jan. 5 at Big Bear.

PREP WRESTLING

Serrano took ninth place as a team at the Blackwatch Tournament at Upland High School on Tuesday.

Blake Chaffee, a sophomore, led the way for the Diamondbacks by placing second place in the 170-pound division. He went 4-1 on the day with three victories coming via pinfall.

His older brother, Tanner, came in fourth place in the 182-pound division after winning four of five matches. All his victories came by pinfall.

Angelo Franco placed third in the heavyweight division after going 6-1 with four victories coming by pinfall.

Apple Valley also competed in the tournament and finished 15th overall. Jayson Orosco placed fifth at 113 pounds, scoring 18.5 points after going 5-2 in the tournament.

At 220 pounds, James Reed placed third with 26 points. He went 6-1, and ended the tournament by scoring a 6-2 victory over Palm Desert's Issac Vera in the third-place match.
