Area Roundup: Hesperia tops Oak Hills in Mojave River League wrestling opener

The Hesperia wrestling team officially kicked off the season with a 40-24 victory over Oak Hills in the Mojave River League opener Wednesday night.

Hesperia began the night by winning four consecutive matches by pinfall to take a quick 24-0 lead and Oak Hills couldn’t really recover from there.

Paulo Valdez kicked off the action with a pinfall over Vincent Hanna at 106 pounds.

Three more pinfalls from Zach Southern (113), Emiliano Hernandez (120) and Andrew Diaz (126) followed right after. Frankie Stevenson picked up Hesperia’s fifth pinfall victory later in the night at 182 pounds over Dylan Bentz.

Hector Hernandez (132), Matthias Valdez (145) and Michael Salazar (195) each won their matches by decision.

For Oak Hills, Dominic Tamayo (152) and Julian Jeong (170) won their matches via pinfall, and Alex Lopez (138), John Mancera (160), Jacob Hernandez (220) and Charles King (285) each picked up decision victories.

Both teams are back in action on Dec. 14. Oak Hills is on the road against Apple Valley, while Hesperia is home against Serrano.

Hesperia 64, San Dimas 50

Xavier Figuroa drained five three-pointers to lead the Scorpions in the Glendora tournament on Tuesday night.

Figueroa ended with a team-high 17 points.

Mark Jones finished right behind with 16 points and also dished 11 assists; Tarron Grim scored 12 points with five rebounds and three blocks; and Jessie Martinez chipped in 11 points with five rebounds.

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL

Apple Valley 43, Big Bear 14

Isabelle Cornejo set a school record on Dec. 1 by blocking 10 shots, and also snagged 11 rebounds to lead the Sun Devils past the Bears.

Simran Ahluwalia led the offense by scoring 10 points to go along with nine steals.

PREP BOYS SOCCER

Adelanto 2, Sultana 0

At Adelanto, Damian Espinoza scored two goals to lead the Saints past the Sultans on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Ivan Gil recorded seven saves in the shutout.

Adelanto (4-0-1) is back in action Thursday at home against Apple Valley. Sultana (4-3-3) heads to Victor Valley on Dec. 12.

Serrano 3, Granite Hills 2

At Phelan, the Diamondbacks got goals from three different players Tuesday in the team’s first victory over the Cougars since 2011.

Serrano took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal from Mando Espinosa, a freshman. Goals from Aaron Pratt and Jonah Willyerd followed in the second half.

Both teams are back in action Friday. Serrano (3-2) takes on Fontana, while Granite Hills (1-3) hosts Cajon.

Sultana takes second place at the Citrus Hills tourney

The Sultans allowed a goal to Colton in the final 10 minutes of regulation in the title game of the Citrus Hills tournament on Monday night and lost 1-0.

Sultana began the tourney with a 1-1 draw against Vista Murrieta on Dec. 1. Nate Guzman scored for Sultana and Colbey Jacobs recorded two saves in goal for Sultana.

In the quarterfinals on Dec. 2, Sultana beat JW North 1-0 as Steve Arevlano scored with eight minutes left on an assist from Chris Echeverria.

Goalkeeper Danny Escalante recorded four saves in the shutout.

The matchup was a rematch from when the teams met in the wildcard round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 5 playoffs last season. Sultana beat JW North 3-1 last year.

On the following day, Sultana beat Temescal Canyon in penalty kicks 4-3 after going scoreless in regulation.

Goalkeeper Hayden Millard came up big for the Sultans with five saves during the game, and blocked two shots in the shootout. Chris Echeverria, David Hernandez, Nate Guzman and Steve Arevalo each scored in the shootout.

Oak Hills 4, Chaparral 0

At Oak Hills, Alyssa Vernon scored a hat trick to lead the Bulldogs to their first victory of the season Tuesday afternoon.

Takoah Castillo assisted on each of Vernon’s three goals and also assisted on Mollie Zielke’s.

Kendall Ness tallied six saves in goal.

Granite Hills 4, Serrano 3

At Apple Valley, the Cougars rallied from a 3-2 deficit at halftime to beat the Diamondbacks at home Tuesday afternoon.

Samantha Grantham scored two goals and assisted on another for Granite Hills, and Julia Alvarado and Makenzie Bohn also scored.

For Serrano, Jalen Diaz scored two goals, Jasmine Cordero scored on and Mariah Kavanaugh ended with an assist. In goal, Ryann Munoz tallied 12 saves.

AAE 2, Palmdale Aerospace Academy 1

At Palmdale, Abbey Gremer and Brooke Ebright each scored a goal with an assist to lead the Knights to victory Tuesday.

Gremer put AAE on the board in the first half, scoring on a corner kick from Ebright. Gremer assisted on Ebright’s go-ahead goal in the 75th minute.

Goalkeeper Bella Moreno recorded six saves in net.

The Knights (8-0) are back in action Friday against Silver Valley.

Cypress 1 (3), Apple Valley 1 (1)

At Bellflower, the Sun Devils lost in penalty kicks in the title game of the Sal Marroquin Memorial Tournament on Dec. 5.

Apple Valley began the tournament with a 2-1 victory over California on Dec. 2. In the victory Sarah Fort scored a goal and assisted on Alia Collins’. Maya Blodgett recorded eight saves.

In a double-header the following day, Apple Valley routed St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy 10-0 as Fort led the way with four goals, Savannah James and Samantha Most each scored two and Kyndell Hendrix and Mia Marquez each scored one.

In the second game, Apple Valley beat Mayfair 2-0 on goals from Fort and Kaydence Bonneau. Blodgett made two saves in the shutout.
