Area Roundup: Mendoza's walk-off lifts Victor Valley past Barstow in extra innings

Carlos Mendoza drove in the game-winning run in the eighth inning to push the Victor Valley baseball team past Barstow in a pitching duel Thursday afternoon.

With one out and runners on second and third base, Mendoza sent a 3-2 pitch to left field to score Dominic Dominguez.

Mikey Jimenez picked up the victory on the mound. He threw 94 pitches over eight innings, allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out seven batters.

Barstow also got a superb effort from

Gabriel Hernandez, who tossed seven innings and struck out 12 batters.

Hernandez also drove in Barstow’s lone run.

The Aztecs broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning after Hernandez hit a two-out grounder to second base, scoring Dominic Acosta.

Victor Valley responded in the bottom of the inning. Mollinedo drew a two-out walk and then advanced to third base after Dominguez reached base with a single.

Mollinedo came around to score on a grounder to left field by Gabriel Munoz, but the Jackrabbits weren’t able to drive in another run.

Victor Valley nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when Aaron Ramirez was thrown out trying to score on a single by Jimenez for the second out. With runners on first and third, Hernandez struck out Alex Rodriguez to send the game to extra innings.

Jimenez retired the side in the top of the eighth inning.

Dominguez drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning and then advanced to third on a double by Munoz. Dominguez came around to score on a single to left field by Mendoza.

Victor Valley (9-4, 3-0 Desert Sky League) is back in action Saturday against Whittier Christian in the Anaheim Lions tournament, while Barstow (10-4, 1-2 DSL) hosts Silverado on March 24.

At Apple Valley, the Saints scored 11 runs in the first inning Thursday afternoon and improved to 2-0 in Desert Sky League action.

Kyle Adcock went 1 for 3 with three RBI. Darren Atkinson, Andrew Lopez and Jesse Najera each drove in two runs. Atkinson scored three runs and Lopez scored twice.

Chris Espinoza tossed a complete game and was tagged for three earned runs on nine hits. He also struck out four batters.

The Saints (10-4) host Silverado on Tuesday afternoon.

Hesperia Christian 9, Rosamond 1

At Hesperia, Kyle Day struck out 10 batters over five innings to lead the Patriots in nonleague action Thursday afternoon.

Day was tagged for one earned run on four hits and allowed six walks. Logan Day pitched two innings in relief and struck out four.

At the dish, Day went 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs.

Luke Skinner went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run, and Cody New went 1 for 2 with two walks, an RBI and two runs.

The Patriots (7-2) are back in action Tuesday against Trona.

At Victorville, the Scorpions picked up another victory on the season and matched their season-best score Thursday afternoon.

Brady McColm led the way for Hesperia ending one over par at 37.

The Scorpions (7-0) are back in action at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena on Monday before beginning Mojave River League action March 29.

At Palm Desert, the Sun Devils dropped to 1-2 on the season with a loss at Desert Willow Golf Resort on Thursday afternoon.

Dylan Kemple led Apple Valley with a 38, followed by Brady Fonville’s 42.

The Sun Devils are next in action Monday at West Covina’s Bulldog Tournament.

At Victorville, the Bulldogs topped the Hawks in nonleague action Thursday afternoon

Nyomi Estrada picked up the win in the circle with five strikeouts for Oak Hills.

Maddie Romo, Hailey Corona and Carly Baze each tallied three hits, and Holly Medina and Melina Retemal both collected two hits.

Daylin Hoenisch hit a bases-clearing double, a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch.

The Bulldogs (8-8) are off until March 25 when they host Hesperia.
