Area roundup: Mt. Blue baseball edges Leavitt in one of several close games Wednesday

May 19—TURNER — Mt. Blue scored twice in the eighth inning to escape with a 6-4 baseball victory over Leavitt on Wednesday.

The Cougars (5-6) broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Hornets (5-8) responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to force extra innings. Finally, in the eighth, Mt. Blue grabbed a lead that Leavitt wasn't able to answer.

The Cougars took their first lead with three runs in the second inning, but the Hornets scored one run in the second, third and fifth innings to tie the game.

Brody Walsh hit a three-run home run for Mt. Blue. Isaac Wrigley added two hits, including a double, for the Cougars, as did Jayden Meader, Nolan Leso and Hayden Durrell. Hayden Dippner pitched four innings of relief and earned the win.

Noah Carpenter and Connor DeCoster each had a pair of hits for Leavitt.

The Roadrunners (8-2) emerged from a pitchers' duel victorious over the Ramblers (7-5) in Salem.

Mt. Abram pitcher Adam Luce tossed a complete-game two-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks, while Winthrop's Tyler Shumway fanned nine batters, allowed five hits and walked only one in six innings.

The Mountain Valley Conference matchup was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Shumway drove in Brayden Stubbert to give the Ramblers a 1-0 lead.

Mt. Abram responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Wyatt Siemenski drove in Tucker Plouffe to tie the score, and then Ian Allen knocked in Siemenski for the go-ahead run.

The Cougars (6-5) came from behind to take down the Bulldogs (6-6) in Dixfield.

After trailing 4-3, Dirigo scored twice in the fifth inning to take the lead, then tacked on another run in the sixth.

Curtis Errington hit a double and two singles to lead all hitters, while teammates Trenton Hutchinson and Wyatt Smith each notched a pair of hits for the Cougars.

Thomas Dean hit a homer for Madison and Deacon Murry had two hits.

The Greyhounds' (10-0) nine-run third inning put away the Bulldogs (7-4) in five innings in Lisbon.

Lisbon started it's scoring with a two-run first inning, and capped it with a run in the fourth.

Hunter Brissette and Levi Tibbetts each notched a single and a double for the Greyhounds. Nick Ferrence struck out nine batters and allowed only two hits in five innings on the mound.

Hall-Dale's Max Byron and Cody Cobb each hit a single.

The Knights (6-5) seized control with a five-run first inning and downed the Raiders (3-9) in Poland.

Hunter Gibson and Adam Gwarjanski each tallied three hits. Gwarjanski also drove in three runs.

Caleb Micklon had two hits for Fryeburg.

Stevie Walsh went 3 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs, and Sam Lowenstein pitched a four-hitter as the Clippers (8-4) topped the Patriots (4-8) in five innings at Yarmouth.

Jack McCosh contributed a double, a single and three RBIs.

Mike Sweeney had a pair of hits for Gray-New Gloucester.

The Red Eddies (5-7) squeaked past the Vikings (9-2) when Kassidy Lobb scored the winning run in the eighth inning in Paris.

Edward Little scored five runs in the top half of the seventh to take an 8-5 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, though, the Vikings answered with three runs to tie the game and force extras.

Lobb took over in the circle with one out in the bottom of the seventh and the bases loaded. Oxford Hills' Maddy Miller hit a two-run single. Edward Little's throw home was too late to get the second runner, but catcher Izzy Jalbert threw to third in time to prevent a base runner from taking an extra base. A ground out ended the inning with the scored tied at 8-8.

Lobb led off the eighth inning with a walk and advanced to third on pair of groundouts before scoring go-ahead run on a triple by Leah Thibodeau. Lobb then stranded Oxford Hills' Miah Gallon at second base in the bottom half of the inning to secure the upset victory.

Emily Horton and Amanda Raymond had a pair of hits apiece for the Red Eddies.

Oxford Hills pitcher Maddy Miller (nine strikeouts) and Chloe Estes each hit triples, while Kaydence Morse and Trinity Bernard each doubled.

Haley Bate stole home to score the winning run for the Roadrunners (3-7) in a walk-off win over the Ramblers (6-5) in Salem.

With the bases loaded, Bate drew a throw to third then bolted for home.

Mt. Abram pitcher Adrianna Stinchfield struck out nine batters while allowing only one run on one hit. She also had one of the Roadrunners' two hits, a double. The other was a single by Bate.

Winthrop pitcher Lauryn Wood struck out five batters and tossed a two-hitter. Ella Rice had the Ramblers' lone hit, a bunt single.

Gabbi Bolduc lined a walk-off single, her third hit of the contest, to drive in pinch runner Kayleigh Hood in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Knights (11-0) remained undefeated by edging the Raiders (5-7) at Poland.

Gretchyn Paradis led the way with four base hits for Poland. Emma Bunyea blasted a two-run homer and had a triple and single while driving in five runs. Starting pitcher Atlantis Martin added a pair of hits, and got on base to start the eighth inning offense before Hood pinch ran for her.

Katy McIntyre, Camden Jones and Shelby Purlow had three hits each for Fryeburg Academy.

Elena Miller's bases-loaded single drove home the winning run, completing a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh as the Clippers (1-11) beat the Patriots (4-8) in Yarmouth.

Drea Rideout, who scored the winning run, went 4 for 4 with five RBIs, including a grand slam. Emma Butsch finished with three RBIs on two hits.

Gray-New Gloucester's Maisie Lerrette had four hits and eight RBIs, and broke an 8-8 tie with a grand slam in the top of the seventh. Skye Chandler was 2 for 3 and drove two runs for the Patriots.

The Bucks (4-7) pulled away after overcoming an early deficit to take down the Phoenix (4-7) in Buckfield.

Spruce Mountain took a 4-2 lead after the top of the third inning before Buckfield scored three in the bottom half of the inning. The Bucks added six more runs in the final three frames while holding the Phoenix scoreless.

Alyssa Litchfield, Cora Brewster and Abigail Prokey all hit triples for Buckfield, while Carmen Crockett gave up one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief work to earn the win.

Jaydn Pingree notched two hits and scored two runs for Spruce Mountain.

A six-run first inning propelled the Hornets (8-5) to a win over the Cougars (0-11) in Turner.

Nola Boutaugh and Emily Poland both notched a pair of singles and Logan Arsenault hit a double for Leavitt.

Mt. Blue's Eva Stevens had a big game at the plate, hitting two home runs and a single.

The Bulldogs (10-1) scored in six of seven innings in their win over the Cougars (4-7) in Dixfield.

Landyn Landry tallied three hits, including a double and a home run, for Madison, while Brooke McKenney struck out 11 batters from the circle.

Alyvia Perreault and Emma MacFarland both notched a hit for Dirigo.

The Mustangs (9-0) stayed undefeated with a comfortable home victory over the Cobras (0-8) in Monmouth.

Casey Kaplan led the way at the plate for Monmouth with a double and a single, and Rileigh Chase, Brooklyn Federico and Katie Laliberte added doubles. Federico was also the winning pitcher.

Brooke Welch smacked a double for one of Carrabec's two hits.
