Area Roundup: Oak Hills wraps up second-straight MRL wrestling title

The Oak Hills wrestling team topped Serrano 56-24 on Thursday night to claim its second-straight outright Mojave River League title.

Both teams entered the matchup unbeaten in league action. The Bulldogs had already clinched a share of the title and could have shared the title with Serrano, which entered with a 3-0 record in MRL action.

Eight of Oak Hills’ 10 victories came via pin fall.

Lane Saunders (113), Noah Carr (120), Kameron Yamada (126), Isaac Hernandez (138), Dominic Tamayo (145), Julian Jeong (152), Jacob Hernandez (195) and Charles King (220) each won their matches with a pin.

Brody Albertson (132) and Dylan Bentz (160) both scored major decision victories.

For Serrano, Blake Chaffee (170), Tanner Chaffee (182), and Angelo Franco (285) each won their matches by pin fall.

Brent Cannon went unchallenged at 106 pounds and won by forfeit.

Oak Hills ends its season 5-0 in league action.

Serrano wraps up its season next week against Hesperia.

Silverado 3, Victor Valley 1

At Victorville, the Hawks notched their 11th victory of the season after scoring two second-half goals to beat the Jackrabbits on Thursday.

Silverado took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, and Victor Valley quickly responded with a goal by Jose Vega to even the score 1-1.

But the Hawks struck quickly in the second half, scoring less than a minute in for a 2-1 lead.

“We had moments of greatness. We really moved the ball well, especially later in the second half,” said Victor Valley head coach Fidel Gonzales. “But we had lapses in focus that were costly.”

Silverado (11-1-2, 4-0-1 Desert Sky League) travels to Granite Hills on Tuesday, while Victor Valley (4-6, 2-2 DSL) is back in action Jan. 27 at Barstow.

Granite Hills 8, Barstow 2

At Barstow, Samantha Grantham scored five goals and assisted on one as the Cougars topped the Aztecs.

Makenzie Bohn scored the other three goals for Granite Hills. She also assisted on one of Grantham’s goals.

Islet Montes tallied two assists, and Sophia Toranzo, Tori Villegas and Anahi Manrique each assisted on a goal.

Analiese Castel recorded three saves in goal.

The Cougars (10-1-2, 5-0 Desert Sky League) travel to Silverado on Tuesday.
