Oskaloosa sends one to state, Pella falls just short of qualifying

PELLA — Several talented Iowa boys golf teams took on Bos Landen at Monday's Class 3A District Tournament. The top two teams would earn spots at state but unfortunately for Oskaloosa and Pella, those bids would go to Williamsburg (322) and Knoxville (324).

The good news was that Oskaloosa's Johnathon Terpstra would earn his third trip to state by taking advantage of an individual qualifier bid by finishing second on the day with a round of 77. Terpstra finished 37th at state last year with rounds of 92 and 88.

For Pella, they would finish 13 shots away from second with a round of 337. Cade Mcginley finished just shy of an individual bid as he was one shot behind Terpstra for second with a round of 78. AJ Hoekstra also wasn't far behind with an 80 while Cole Floden (88) and Luke Naig (91) rounded out the lineup.

Terpstra will compete in the Class 3A Boys State Golf Tournament on May 22-23 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

Pella Christian advances to state

WAPELLO — The Pella Christian Boys golf team was at Heritage Oaks Golf Course for the their district meet on Monday as they were able to edge out a second place finish to secure a spot at the state tournament.

Beckman won the district with a score of 302 while Pella Christian came in second with a 320 to finish six shots ahead of Tipton for the final bid as there were some nervous moments in the clubhouse while the final scores were being tallied.

The Eagles were paced by a pair of top 10 finishes from Isaiah Breems and Deacon Branderhorst, who both shot 78 to finish tied for seventh. Eliot Menninga's 81 and Cooper Spronk's 83 rounded out the scoring for PC.

Pella Christian will play in the Class 2A Boys State Golf Tournament on May 22-23 at Coldwater Links in Ames.

No. 3 Marion 1, No. 12 Pella 0 (OT)

PELLA — The Dutch put up a good fight against the undefeated Wolves of Marion before coming up just short in overtime.

Marion came into the match without allowing a single goal all season and sporting the top goal scorer in Iowa in Jackson Kirsch, who has 63 goals to his name this year.

Pella came out with good energy and pressure and forced Marion to play one of their tightest games this season. The Dutch had some looks but Marion keeper Calen Claypool came away with 13 saves to keep Pella off the scoreboard.

Finally in the second overtime period and the 94th minute, the Wolves would take advantage of a mishandle by the Pella keeper and put in the game-winning goal.

No. 12 Pella (8-7) heads to the postseason as they will travel to No. 16 Cedar Rapids Washington (6-9) on Monday at 5:30 p.m. for a substate semifinal matchup.

Baseball

No. 10 (3A) Pella 12, PCM 2 (5)

PELLA — Baseball season is underway and the 10th-ranked Dutch were able to grab a run-rule win on their home field on in Monday's season-opening win over PCM in five innings.

Pella used a strong pitching performance that actually ended in a combined no-hitter. Nathan Carey got the start on the bump for the Dutch and would pitch four hitless innings with seven strikeouts but would also also seven walks. Free passes were a big issue on the night as the two teams combined for 17 walks and one hit batsmen. Freshman Samuel Carlson pitched the fifth inning for Pella before the team closed it out with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Leading the way offensively for the Dutch was Tate Weesner going 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Joe Bokhoven also drove in three runs. Carey got the win and added a 2-for-2 effort at the plate as well.

No. 10 (3A) Pella (1-0) continues a busy week to start the season with another game at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Bondurant-Farrar (2-0).
