Pella advances to state, Osky's Terpstra qualifies as individual

PELLA — Taking on the challenging Bos Landen on Monday, the Pella boys golf team was able to clinch a trip to the state tournament after finishing one shot behind Knoxville for second place with a team score of 322. After entering as the lone Indian in the district meet, Oskaloosa's Johnathon Terpstra also punched his ticket to state as an individual.

Since Pella was hosting the event, they needed a top-two finish to qualify as a team. They would do that by five strokes to finish ahead of Newton, who still qualified since the top three teams are taken if the host team finishes in the top two.

Pella was led by another strong round from Will Simpson, who finished with a bogey-free 70 to take home the medalist honors.

Last year Simpson went to stay as an individual, this year he will be competing with his teammates after Ayden Gordon (81), Cade McGinley (85) and AJ Hoekstra (86) all had strong rounds to put the Dutch in second.

Terpstra was competing as an individual and was able to put a consistent round together to card an 82, good for eighth overall and a trip to state.

The Boys 3A State Tournament will be on May 23-24 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

STATE CENTER — After a slow start, Pella Christian was able to put some pretty good scores on the board. Unfortunately it was not enough to advance as they finished with a team score of 334, 13 shots behind Hudson for second place.

Baseball

Oskaloosa 6, Albia 5

OSKALOOSA — Baseball is back in a big way for Oskaloosa as they walked off a wild season opener on Monday night.

Albia got the first run on the night, taking advantage of an Oskaloosa error to go up 1-0. That lead would hold until the fifth inning with the Blue Demons adding an insurance run to make it 2-0.

The Indians got that run back in the fifth and would take the lead in the sixth with three more runs coming across with Charlie North, Trey Miller and Marcus Fresquez all driving in runs.

Albia rallied with three runs of their own to take back the lead with their backs against the wall and turn the tables on Oskaloosa, who now trailed 5-4 going to the bottom of the seventh.

A leadoff walk and wild pitch would put the tying run at second base with Aiden North at the plate. North would get into a favorable 3-1 count and would jump on the next pitch and nuke it to left center over the fence for a walk-off two-run homer. North paused at second base for a second not knowing if it did clear the fence before rounding the bases and getting mobbed by his teammates at home plate.

Alex Christ started on the mound for Oskaloosa, going three innings giving up one run on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Logan Hoskinson eventually got the win in relief after pitching one inning and striking out two.

North finished 2-for-4 at the plate with one home run and two RBIs.

Oskaloosa (1-0) is right back at it on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to Fairfield (0-1).

Pella 13, PCM 0 (5)

MONROE — It was a very successful first night of action for the Pella baseball team on Monday as they made the trip to PCM and left with a run-rule win after five innings.

Jason Knox was dominant on the mound and at the plate for the Dutch. Knox would pitch five no-hit innings with 13 punch outs while also going 3-for-4 at the dish finishing a triple short of the cycle with a single, double, home run and five RBIs.

Freshman Isaiah Kettler made a good first impression going 1-for-2 with a walk, a home run and threes RBIs in his varsity debut. Cole Hillman, Quinn Rhamy and Caleb Stewart also had an RBI for the Dutch.

Pella (1-0) continues their three games in three days start on Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a trip to Bondurant-Farrar (1-0).
