Area Roundup: Rodriguez cranks 2 grand slams, University Prep claims Cross Valley League softball title

Bibi Rodriguez had quite an offensive showcase Tuesday afternoon as her two grand slams led the way to the league title.

The University Prep softball team topped Riverside Prep 18-7 to claim the Cross Valley League title, coupled with Big Bear’s loss to CIMS.

Rodriguez cranked her 11th and 12th home runs of the season and is up to 49 RBI.

While Rodriguez, a senior, led the offense Dani Jackman added to her state-leading stats.

Jackman, a sophomore, slugged her 18th homer and 67th RBI of the season. Both marks are the best in California, according to MaxPreps.com.

Victoria Mendez ended the day 3 for 3 with a triple, double and four RBI.

Jayleen Lopez allowed four earned runs on seven hits over five innings and picked up her 15th win of the season.

University Prep (17-5, 8-1 CVL) wraps up the season at home Thursday against Big Bear.

Silverado 12, Barstow 2

At Victorville, the Hawks scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and topped the Aztecs at home Tuesday afternoon.

Adam Medina led the way for Silverado by going 3 for 3 with a walk, three RBI and a run; Dylan Pauling went 2 for 4 with two RBI and a run; and Uriel Martin ended 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run.

The teams wrap up the season at Barstow on Thursday afternoon.

Hesperia Christian 10, Big Bear 7

At Hesperia, Kyle Day and Cody New combined for 13 strikeouts as the Patriots topped the Bears to end the season with a share of the Cross Valley League title.

Day struck out seven batters, allowed five runs on three hits and three walks over three innings. New allowed two unearned runs on two hits and two hits over four innings. At the plate, New slugged one of three Hesperia Christian’s home runs. He ended 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run.

Arlan Koester and Ayden Ortega hit the other two homers. Koester ended 2 for 4 with four RBI and two runs, and Ortega went 2 for 2 with a walk, two RBI and two runs.

At Victorville, for the first time since 2013 the Silver Knights are league champions.

Riverside Prep scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to end the season tied atop the Cross Valley League standings with Hesperia Christian.

Cayman Pluma helped lead the way by going 2 for 4 with a RBI and run; Isaiah Gomez went 2 for 5 with two runs; and Skylar Owens went 1 for 5 with two RBI and a run.

ACE 5, CIMS 2

At Victorville, Ben Carlson tossed a complete game and led the Eagles to the Agape League title with a victory over the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.

Carlson struck out five batters, allowed one earned run on five hits and walked two. He also collected a hit and a run at the dish.

Robbie Mazzarese slugged a three-run home run in the fifth inning and scored two runs; and Sean Powell hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to give ACE a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles (7-5, 5-0 Agape League) wrap up the season at home Thursday against CIMS.

At Apple Valley, the Eagles racked up 19 runs in the season finale, ending the season with a 5-5 record in Cross Valley League action.

The top three teams in the league are guaranteed a spot in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs and with a .500 finish, Excelsior has a slim chance at earning an at-large bid.

Quentin Krogsgaard helped lead the offense by going 3 for 5 with three RBI and four runs, and Brandon Steele went 4 for 5 with three RBI and two runs.

Silver Valley 13, Lucerne Valley 0

At Lucerne Valley, Jason Mitzel struck out seven batters and allowed two hits in the Trojans’ mercy-rule victory over the Mustangs.

Jesse Dillow helped lead the offense by going 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run; Lawson Talarico went 1 for 3 with two RBI; Brel Fields went 2 for 3 with three runs and a RBI; and Tre Harvey went 3 for 3 with three runs and a RBI.

The teams wrap up the season at Silver Valley on Thursday.

At Llano, the Diamondbacks improved to 4-5 in Mojave River League action with a victory over the Sultans on Tuesday afternoon.

At Victorville, the Jackrabbits topped the Saints on Tuesday afternoon, keeping their hopes at ending the season tied atop the Desert Sky League standings.

Victor Valley is now tied with Barstow at a game behind Silverado in the standings with one game left to play.

Alaysia Ross led the way for the Jackrabbits in the circle. She held the Saints to three earned runs on nine hits and six strikeouts. At the dish, Ross went 1 for 4 with two RBI.

Vanessa Gomez went 4 for 4 with a run and RBI; Day'Onna Robinson went 3 for 4 with a run; and Valerie Garcia and Alany Esparza each tallied two hits with a run.

Victor Valley (14-6, 8-3 DSL) heads to Adelanto on Thursday to wrap up the season.

At Adelanto, the Saints ended the season with a victory over the Jackrabbits to end the season 6-9 in Desert Sky League action.
