Victorville sports highlights: Sultana baseball tops Serrano. Plus, softball, tennis scores

The Sultana baseball team erased an early deficit Tuesday night, and a five-run third inning powered the way to a 14-3 victory over Serrano.

Serrano jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a fielder’s choice from Cris Espino, followed by a two-run home run from Mason Shimizu.

Sultana threatened to score in the third inning following a lead-off triple from Chris Manley, followed by a single from Geoffrey Rodrigues.

Alex Gamez roped a line drive to third base. Shane Williams caught the ball, got out at third, and then tripled up Rodrigues at first base for the inning-ending triple play.

But Sultana finally struck in the fourth inning with two-run home runs from Caillou Estrada and Eric Ruiz.

Rodrigues also tripled in the inning, scoring Manley for a 5-3 lead.

It was all Sultana from there.

Both Rodrigues and Manley ended with three hits on the day. Rodrigues went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run, and Chris Manley went 3 for 3 with two runs;

LJ Borrego led the offense by going 4 for 4 with two RBI and three runs; Isaiah Crowe went 2 for 4 with two RBI, three runs, and a stolen base; Ruiz went 2 for 4 with three RBI and a run; Brayden Booth went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run; and Estrada ended 2 for 3 with two RBI and three runs.

Sultana’s victory snapped a two-game losing streak and avoided a three-way tie for third place in the Mojave River League standings with Serrano and Burroughs.

Instead, Sultana is tied at 7-5 in MRL action with Apple Valley, with both teams having three league games left to play.

Serrano (6-11, 5-5 MRL) hosts Sultana (11-9) on Thursday afternoon to wrap up the season series between the teams.

Prep baseball

Hesperia 6, Apple Valley 2

On Tuesday afternoon, a three-run third inning lifted the Scorpions to victory over the Sun Devils at Hesperia.

Andrew Gutierrez led the way for Hesperia by going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run, and Dru Lona went 2 for 2 with two RBI and a stolen base.

For Apple Valley, Johnny Lloyd went 2 for 3 with a run, and Ethan Cheek went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The teams are back in action Thursday afternoon at Apple Valley.

Oak Hills 6, Burroughs 1

At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs got back in the win column Tuesday afternoon after losing to the Burros the previous day.

Carlos Estrella struck out six batters and allowed one run on three hits over six innings, and George Malone tossed the seventh inning.

Jacob Webster helped lead the offense by going 3 for 4 with two RBI and a stolen base; Angelo Rizzo went 3 for 4 with a run; and Paul Montoya went 2 for 2 with two walks, two runs, and two stolen bases.

The teams wrap up their season series Thursday afternoon at Burroughs.

Hesperia Christian 14, University Prep 1

On Tuesday afternoon, at Victorville, Cody New struck out 19 batters and slugged two home runs to help lead the Patriots past the Jaguars.

New was masterful on the mound over seven innings, allowing one run on one hit. He ended 2 for 2 with six RBI and three runs.

Luke Skinner went 2 for 3 with two runs and a stolen base; Logan Day went 2 for 5 with a run; Ayden Ortega went 2 for 3 with two RBI, a run, and two stolen bases; Jared Bragg went 2 for 5 with two RBI, a run and a stolen base.

The teams are back in action Thursday at Hesperia Christian.

Mendoza leads the way at the eighth CVL match

At Helendale, Miguel Mendoza of CIMS led all shooters with a 38 on the east course at Silver Lakes Country Club on Monday afternoon.

ACE took first place as a team with 209 points, led by Jacob Hutchinson’s score of 41, which was good for second place among all shooters. Teammates Nate Carlson, Cody Grounds, Bryce Johnson, and Keegan Johnson were all tied for third with a score of 42.

Sultana sweeps doubleheader against Burroughs

Savannah Vanderpool tossed a no-hitter over five innings and struck out 13 batters as the Sultans won both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

In the 12-1 victory, Sultana jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then scored two runs in the second, followed by seven in the third.

Macy McDonald helped lead the offense by going 3 for 4 with three RBI, two runs, and a stolen base; Avery Rodriguez went 3 for 3 with three RBI and three runs; and Hope Merrill went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run.

In the second game, Sultana shutout Burroughs 13-0 after scoring 10 runs in the third inning.

McDonald and Katelyn Parrish each hit a home run and drove in three runs.

Jordan Mullinax struck out five batters over three innings, while Aaliyah Huizar tossed two hitless innings.

Sultana (12-12, 6-1 MRL) heads to Oak Hills on Thursday afternoon for a first-place showdown.

Apple Valley 17, Oak Hills 6

At Apple Valley, the Sun Devils cranked five home runs on Tuesday afternoon, handing the Bulldogs their first loss in Mojave River League action.

Corra Utash helped lead the way for Apple Valley by slugging two home runs. Utah ended 2 for 2 with two walks, three RBI, and four runs.

Bayleigh Frye went 3 for 3 with a home run, four RBI, and a run; Bethany Morrison went 2 for 3 with a home run, four RBI, three runs, and a stolen base; and Brynne Johnson went 1 for 1 with a home run, two walks, two RBI and three runs.

For Oak Hills, Holly Medina went 3 for 3 with two runs and three stolen bases; Daylin Hoenisch went 2 for 3 with a run; Lillian Cain went 1 for 2 with two RBI; and Maddie Romo hit a two-run home run.

Oak Hills (13-5, 6-1 MRL) hosts Sultana on Thursday, while Apple Valley (14-6, 4-3 MRL) heads to Serrano.

At Apple Valley, the Silver Knights rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Knights on the road Tuesday afternoon.

Samantha Urtiaga helped lead the way for Riverside Prep by going 2 for 4 with an RBI, two runs, and three runs; America Barajas-Sanchez went 2 for 4 with an RBI, a run, and a stolen base; Belle Lopez went 3 for 4; and Cyndel Lopez went 2 for 3 with a run.

Kayla Zierdt hit two solo home runs for AAE, and Hayden Gonzales went 2 for 2 with a run and a stolen base.

The teams are back in action Thursday at Riverside Prep.

At Victorville, the Jaguars improved to 7-0 in Cross Valley League action with a victory over the Cougars on Tuesday afternoon.

Dani Jackman led University Prep’s offense by going 4 for 4 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs; Caylen Gonzalez went 4 for 3 with two RBI and three runs; and Cemaira Romo, Victoria Patino, Briseis Vargas, Ariana Romero, and B Villanueva each tallied two hits.

The teams are back in action Thursday at CIMS.

At Hesperia, the Diamondbacks improved to 5-5 in Mojave River League with a victory over the Sultans on Monday afternoon.

Richard Macomber swept in singles action (7-6 (5), 6-1, 6-2), along with the doubles team of Landon Staley and Jackson Kim (6-3, 6-3, 6-3).
