Area Roundup: Victor Valley claims 13th straight Desert Sky League wrestling title

The winning tradition continues for another season for the Victor Valley wrestling team with a dominating 77-0 victory over Adelanto on Tuesday night.

Under the guidance of head coach C.T. Campbell, the Jackrabbits claimed the program’s 13th consecutive Desert Sky League title. Year after year, the Jackrabbits have breezed through the DSL, and Tuesday night was no different as they did not drop a match.

Victor Valley won 11 total matches by pinfall, and two others by decision.

The Jackrabbits are currently the No. 1 ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4, and will look to continue their dominance at the league finals Saturday, which will be held at Barstow High School.

At last year's finals, 11 Victor Valley wrestlers claimed titles, including top returners Avian Singh (145), Aaron Ramirez (138) and Jesse Cardona (182).

Oak Hills 78, Serrano 34

At Phelan, the Bulldogs wrapped up the first round of Mojave River League action with a clean sweep, beating the Diamondbacks by 44 points on Tuesday.

Kenneth Brown led the way for Oak Hills with 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds; Matt Frierson had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds; Vieux Sanneh chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds; and Monsour Sanneh also scored 11 points to go along with six rebounds.

The Bulldogs (12-10, 5-0 MRL) head to Hesperia on Thursday, and a victory would likely lead to securing the league title

Hesperia 76, Sultana 31

At Hesperia, Mark Jones led the scoring with 18 points to go along with eight assists and seven steals as the Scorpions topped the Sultans on Tuesday night.

A pair of Hesperia players also racked up double-doubles. Jessie Martinez scored 17 points and snagged 11 rebounds, and Angullio Guerra ended with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Hesperia (14-7, 4-1 MRL) hosts Oak Hills on Thursday.

Adelanto 2, Victor Valley 1

At Adelanto, the Saints wrapped up the first round of Desert Sky League action with a clean sweep as Damian Espinoza scored the game-winner with just over a minute left in regulation Wednesday night.

Espinoza’s score broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Adelanto to a 4-0 record in league play.

Andrew Lopez put the Saints on the board in the 23rd minute on a goal from Andrew Lopez. Jesus Bobadilla continued his strong play in goal as he tallied 10 saves. The goal allowed to the Jackrabbits was just the first for Adelanto in four league games that found the back of the net.

The Saints (14-8-1) are back in action Jan. 25 at home against Barstow.

Oak Hills 3, Serrano 1

At Phelan, the Bulldogs beat the Diamondbacks on Tuesday and picked up their third victory in Mojave River League action.

D’Angelo Martinez led the way for Oak Hills by scoring two goals; Edgar Alvarez scored a goal; and Ryan Callaway, Ethan Caudle and Raul Becerra each had an assist.

The Diamondbacks (8-10-1, 2-1-1 MRL), while the Bulldogs (10-5-3, 3-0-1 MRL) head to Hesperia.

Hesperia 1, Sultana 0

At Hesperia, the Scorpions picked up their fourth victory in Mojave River league action by squeezing past Sultana in a cross-city rivalry showdown Tuesday.

Julian Orozco scored on an assist from Victor Amaro midway through the second half to give Hesperia the victory. Nate Sanchez recorded three saves in goal.

Hesperia (10-7-3, 4-0-1 MRL) hosts Oak Hills on Thursday, while Sultana (6-6-9, 0-1-2 MRL) heads to Apple Valley.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER

AAE 2, Big Bear 0

At Apple Valley, Abbey Gremer scored both goals to lead the Knights past the Bears on Wednesday.

Caprice Caasi-Friere and Caitlyn Carlson each had an assist, and Bella Moreno made six saves in goal.

AAE (12-2-1, 2-1-1 Cross Valley League) is back in action Friday at Riverside Prep.

Adelanto 2, Victor Valley 1

At Victorville, the Saints jumped into a tie for second place in the Desert Sky League standings with a victory over the Jackrabbits on Wednesday.

Gizelle Martinez scored both goals for Adelanto, which is now tied with Victor Valley at 2-2 in league play.

Adelanto (5-9) is back in action Jan. 25 at Barstow, looking to avenge a 3-1 loss earlier in the season.
