The Victor Valley boys soccer team’s run came to an official end Saturday night.

San Gorgonio took an early 1-0 lead in the CIF State Southern California Regional Division 5 title game and held the Jackrabbits scoreless the rest of the way.

Victor Valley lost 2-0 in the title game, ending a magical run that involved five or six total playoff victories via penalty kicks.

It’s a run unmatched in school history, with the program last reaching a CIF-Southern Section title game in 2017, only to lose in the first round of the regional playoffs shortly after.

This year, Victor Valley reached the CIF-SS Division 6 championship game, which also ended in a 1-0 loss to San Gorgonio. The Jackrabbits entered the regional playoffs as the No. 2 seed, which guaranteed them home field advantage in the first round and semifinals.

The first-round victory, 2-0 over Roybal, was the first in the regional tournament for the program.

“Yeah it was an amazing run we had this season. A season I will forever remember,” Victor Valley head coach Julio Hernandez said. “I feel a bit hurt, the team wanted to win a title for the school. At the same time I feel accomplished with all the success and the amazing run we had in DSL, CIF and state. All the hard work we put in makes me proud as a coach.”

The Jackrabbits are a fairly young team but will see key players graduate this year, including playmakers Josiah Paez and Bryan Solis.

Both have been instrumental in Victor Valley’s run. With their departure it opens the door for players like Candelario Castillo and Dante Celis, both juniors, along with current sophomore Dominic Castillo.

But the team returns one of the biggest pieces next season in goalkeeper Emmanuel Lopez, who is a  junior. Lopez came up big in key moments, constantly setting the tone in the penalty kick shootouts with dramatic diving blocks.

Hernandez, who graduated from Victor Valley in 2018, looks forward to what’s ahead, but is thankful for the way his first year as a head coach ended.

“I love this team and I am very grateful to be a part of this historical team,” Hernandez said.
