Area runners compete in Class A regions; Watertown caps regular season

WEBSTER — Juniors Halle Bauer of Great Plains Lutheran and Payton Brown of Milbank each won individual races Thursday in the Region 1A cross country meet at the Webster Golf Course.

Bauer repeated as the girls' 5,000-meter winner, producing a time of 19 minutes and 42.6 seconds to top 47 runners. Brown beat 55 runners in the boys division, winning in 17:03.42.

Milbank won the boys division for the third-straight year and Clark-Willow Lake edged Milbank 31-34 in the girls division, ending the Bulldogs' two-year reign. Deuel was third in the girls division and second in the boys division, followed by Aberdeen Roncalli.

Jaycee Hourigan of Deuel, Kamryn Nesheim of Clark-Willow Lake, Madison Zirbel of Waubay-Summit and Addison Cassady of Aberdeen Roncalli rounded out the top five in the girls divison. Kaleb Foltz of Tri-State was second in the boys division, followed by Ricky Berndt of Deuel and James Batchelor and Bryan Meyer of Milbank.

The top three teams and 20 individuals qualified for the state cross country meet on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Region 2A

SALEM — Isabelle Bloker of Sioux Valley won the girls' 5,000-meter race Thursday in the Region 2A meet at the McCook Country Club.

Bloker won the 56-runner race in 18 minutes and 38.33 seconds and led Sioux Valley to a second-place finish in the girls division.

Sioux Falls Christian again swept the team titles, winning the boys division with a score of 10. West Central and Flandreau each followed at 58. The Chargers took the girls division with a score of 17, followed by Sioux Valley (46) and West Central (50).

Bennett Wassenaar won the boys division (17:06.89) for Sioux Falls Christian, which had the top five finishers and six of the top seven.

OACOMA — Heidi Olson of Mobridge-Pollock and Pierce Baumberger of Miller won individual titles Thursday in the Region 4A meet at the Chamberlain Country Club.

Olson topped 39 runners in the girls' 5,000-meter race (19:52). Baumberger beat a field of 61 runners to win the boys' 5,000 (17:44), followed by teammate Alex Schumacher.

Chamberlain won the girls division with a score of 14, followed by Kimball-White Lake (34) and Miller (65). Miller won the boys division with a score of 22. Chamberlain was second (46) and Kimball-White Lake third (73).

Roger Loecker Invite

HURON — Watertown High School's cross country teams concluded their regular seasons Thursday in the Roger Loecker Invitational at the Broadland Creek Golf Course.

The Arrows will compete in the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 22 on the same course.

Yankton won the girls division with a score of 52, followed by Pierre at 63, Aberdeen Central 64, Watertown 87, Brookings 119 and Huron 121.

Juna Ramey of Aberdeen Central won the girls' 5,000-meter race in a time of 20:25.24. Victoria Smith took second (20:29.2) and Kate McElroy sixth (20:54) to lead Watertown in the 52-runner race.

Other Arrows included Olivia Anderson (16th, 21:50.63), Grace List (30th, 20:31.55), Isabella Horning (39th, 23:08.85), Jayda Jensen (46th, 25:17.59), Elizabeth Rieffenberger (47th, 25:30.28), Abigal Reeves (48th, 25:54.52) and Ava Jensen (52nd, 27:26.97).

Dylan Payer won the boys' race, which included 50 runners, in 17:06.08. Yankton won the team title with a score of 52, followed by Pierre at 61, Aberdeen Central 72, Brookings 98, Watertown 103 and Huron 108.

Ty Sullivan took seventh (17:35.15) to lead the Arrows. Other Watertown runners were Dane Stark (17th, 18:23.16), Bayley Steiner (23rd, 18:48.50), Chris Bevers (29th, 19:04.44), Tucker Lunde (31st, 19:07.95), Briley Martin (34th, 19:19.32), Gabe List (35th, 19:22.83), Isaiah Norton (36th, 19:24.91), Ayden Steiner (37th, 19:29.61) and Ben Peterson (44th, 20:10.78).

Grace McElroy won the middle school girls' 2,400 run (9:22.19) and Carter Clark was second in the middle school boys 2,400 run (9:19.31) for Watertown.
