Area schools recognize outstanding students

NSHS names Teacher's Choice Award

North Star High School selected its Teacher's Choice Award students for November. They are BreAnna Emerick, Marissa Sarver, Parker Scherer and Victoria McAuliffe.

BreAnna Emerick is the daughter of Angela Emerick, Stoystown. She is a 12th grade student who participates in POD honors, early college classes, Pep Club, student council and yearbook. Marissa Sarver is the daughter of Darcy and John Sarver, Hooversville. She is an 11th grade college prep student who was selected as junior class president. She is also on the prom committee.

Parker Scherer is the son of Tawny and Mike Scherer, Boswell. He is a 10th grade college prep student who plays soccer, golf and baseball. Victoria McAuliffe is the daughter of Shaun McAuliffe, Jenners. She is a ninth grade college prep student who is a member of the Spanish Club.

Bowers at Somerset Rotary

Gracie Bowers was selected to represent Somerset Area High School at the Rotary Club of Somerset.

Bowers is a senior enrolled in the college prep course at Somerset. Her extracurricular activities include volleyball, basketball, softball, FCA, Interact Club, student council, French Club, French Honor Society, National Honor Society, Fleet of Fear, Mu Alpha Theta and Health Sciences Club. She is secretary of the student council and of National Honor Society. Bowers received the President's Volunteer Service Award, was named LHAC All-Conference in basketball, Somerset County First Team in softball and recorded 1,000 assists.

She attends St. Peter's Church. She is the daughter of Robert and Nicole Bowers, Friedens.

After graduating, Bowers plans to pursue a bachelors and masters degree in optometry or Physician Assistant at West Virginia University and Florida Gulf Coast. She enjoys playing and watching sports, hanging out with family and friends, listening to music and watching Netflix.

Remarkable Raiders for October

The Meyersdale Area School District Remarkable Raider program recognized its monthly honorees at the November meeting of the school board. Students in grades six through 12 were selected based on the merits of Academic Performance, Character, Behavior, Effort, Good Citizenship and Attendance.

Middle school students named Remarkable Raiders for October are Jaxen Beal, Caleb Sines and Spencer Whitfield. Jaxen Beal, a sixth grade student, is the daughter of Bree and Roger Beal. She is involved in dance and softball. She is a member of the chorus and band, where she plays percussion.

Caleb Sines, seventh grade, is the son of Christina and Andy Sines. He is a member of the junior high football team, and the wrestling and baseball teams. Outside of school, he enjoys hunting and fishing. Spencer Whitfield, eighth grade, is the son of Heidi and Doug Whitfield. He is a member of the junior high football team, as well as the basketball and baseball teams. Outside of school, he enjoys spending time with his family and fishing.

High school students named Remarkable Raiders for October are Isaac Geiger, Joseph Comfort, Marcella Dupre and Jaden Miller. Geiger, a freshman, is the son of Ginger and Thomas Geiger. He enjoys playing baseball and basketball, hunting, fishing and riding bikes. Joseph Comfort, a sophomore, is the son of Lisa and Joseph Comfort. He is a member of the cross country and track and field teams. He competed in the PIAA Cross Country Championship held in Hershey. He is also a member of the wrestling team. In his free time, he enjoys riding his quad and working on his truck.

Marcella Dupre, a junior, is the daughter of Jan Dupre and Gary Sarver. She is a member of the softball and basketball teams and plays on the co-op soccer team with Berlin. She is also a member of the student council, Garden Club, Tech Ed Club and Ski Club. She is participating in flight classes at Laurel Highlands Aeronautical Academy. Jaden Miller, a senior, is the daughter of Heather Miller. She is president of the student council and Science Club. She is also a member of FBLA, National Honor Society, No Place for Hate, Raider Review, 1000+ SAT/PSAT and A-Average Club. Outside of school, she works part-time at CVS and Gindy’s Gym.
