Area soccer players earn All-State honors

May 11—Seven area high school soccer players have been named to the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association All-State teams.

All seven players, six of them girls, came from Class AAAA schools.

Representing Region 5-AAAA champion Aiken on the Class AAAA girls' team are senior midfielder Lindsey Malyszek and senior defender Mallory Rich. Malyszek scored 17 points and had six assists for 40 total points, second best on the team. Rich had 10 assists and nine goals for 28 points.

Region runner-up North Augusta had two selections, as did third-place South Aiken. Junior midfielder Monserrat Avila-Gutierrez and senior defender Irish Miles made the team for North Augusta, and senior goalkeeper Harlee Morales and sophomore defender Anna Clare Platte did for South Aiken.

South Aiken senior midfielder Leo Myers made the Class AAAA boys' team after one of the top statistical seasons in the state. Myers scored 25 goals (tied for fourth in Class AAAA) and had 10 assists for 60 points (sixth in Class AAAA).

The All-State announcements follow up North-South and Clash of the Carolinas all-star selections, with several repeat selections.

Myers will represent South Carolina at Clash of the Carolinas, and Aiken High's Roger Carpenter will be one of two co-coaches along with Wando's Shilo Tisdale.

Malyszek, Morales and Rich will all be teammates on the South girls' team at North-South, and their head coach will be Aiken High's Victor Tice.
