Area spring sports postseason top performers: Five area teams headed to Spring Fling

Riverdale, Stewarts Creek and Eagleville baseball and Stewarts Creek and Eagleville softball are all headed to Spring Fling.

The Warriors defeated Walker Valley 4-2 in the Class 4A sectional Friday at W.T. Jones Field to propel Riverdale to next week's state tournament.

The Red Hawks knocked off Bradley Central 8-5 in a 4A sectional to advance while the Eagles shut out Hollow Rock-Bruceton 10-0 in reach the 1A state tourney.

The Lady Red Hawks rolled past Warren County 9-1 in the 4A sectional to advance to Spring Fling while the defending 1A runner-up Lady Eagles shut out Hollow Rock-Bruceton 6-0 to return to state.

Smyrna's softball team saw its season come to an end with a 7-2 loss to Coffee County in the 4A sectional.

Riverdale (24-15) scored two runs in the second to take the early lead and never looked back.

"I think when you start season, benchmark is to get there. Now that we're here, the benchmark is to win it," Riverdale coach Barry Messer said. "I think we're ready and we're battle tested."

Caleb Jordan's two-run, second-inning single put Riverdale on the board and Bradley Pippin's third-inning RBI-groundout made it 3-1. Jackson Underwood added a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1.

Underwood allowed just three hits and one earned run in six innings, striking out five. Drew Henning pitched a 1-2-3 seventh, striking out two, to earn the save.

The state baseball tourney starts Tuesday night. Class 4A games will be played at Oakland and Siegel High Schools.

Thursday

Oakland earned a home sectional contest with a region championship Thursday. The Patriots scored two late goals and shut out La Vergne 2-0 in the Region 4-AAA finals.

The Patriots will play host to Ooltewah, which fell to Shelbyville 3-2 in the 3-AAA finals, on Saturday at 7 p.m. while the Wolverines will travel to Shelbyville.

Central Magnet fell to Page in the Region 6-AA championship. The Tigers and Patriots went to overtime penalty kicks after a scoreless regulation and extra time for the second consecutive contest (district finals, won by CMS 4-3 in PKs), but this time Central Magnet fell 4-3 in penalty kicks.

Central Magnet will travel to Valor Prep (a 1-0 win over White House-Heritage) in Saturday's sectional.

Mario Perea, Brayden Wilson, Oakland: Each scored second-half goals in a 2-0 win over La Vergne in the Region 4-AAA championship.

Will Palmer, Oakland: Kept a clean sheet in goal and also added an assist in a win over La Vergne.

Wednesday

The Eagleville softball and baseball teams, along with Riverdale's baseball team and Stewarts Creek's softball team, all captured region championships Wednesday.

The Warriors defeated Stewarts Creek 3-1 in the 4-4A baseball title game, while the Lady Red Hawks came from behind to defeat Smyrna 7-5 in the 4-4A softball championship.

Eagleville's softball team, the Class 1A defending runners-up captured the program's first region title with a 4-1 win over Huntland in the 5-1A championship. The Eagles rolled past Moore County 9-3 in the 5-1A baseball title game.

The Oakland and Central Magnet soccer teams and the Smyrna softball squad all locked up sectional berths with region semifinal wins Tuesday.

The Patriots scored the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute in a 2-1 win over Smyrna in the 4-AAA semifinals. Oakland will play host to La Vergne Thursday in the region championship.

The Tigers rolled past Sycamore 10-1 in the 6-AA semis and will have a rematch with district rival Page at home Thursday in the finals.

Smyrna reached the 4-4A softball finals with a 6-3 win over Rockvale. The Lady Bulldogs will play host to rival Stewarts Creek in the region finals Wednesday.

Soccer

Will Kassebaum, Andre Moriel, Central Magnet: Each had two goals and an assist in a 10-1 win over Sycamore in the 6-AA semifinals.

Stewarts Creek's baseball and softball teams and Eagleville's baseball and softball teams both advanced to region championships and earned sectional berths in the process Monday.

The Red Hawks scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth in a 5-4 win over Rockvale in the Region 4-4A baseball semis. The Lady Red Hawks eliminated Siegel 3-1 in the 4-4A softball semis.

Stewarts Creek will host the region baseball finals Wednesday at home against Riverdale while the Lady Red Hawks will play the winner of Tuesday's Smyrna-Rockvale contest in Wednesday's region finals.

The Eagles rolled past Culleoka 20-2 in the Region 5-1A semis while the Lady Eagles shut out Wayne County 5-0.

Central Magnet's baseball and softball teams were both eliminated by Montgomery Central Monday, with the Tigers falling 6-5 and the Lady Tigers dropping a 4-0 decision.

La Vergne's soccer team earned a sectional and region finals berth with a 5-2 win over Siegel Monday. The Wolverines will play Thursday in the finals against the winner of Tuesday's Oakland-Smyrna contest.

Softball

Sunday

Riverdale senior pitcher Jackson Underwood didn't have the start he wanted in the Region 4-4A semifinals Sunday.

He finished just fine, however.

After allowing four runs in the top of the first, Underwood shut down Smyrna the remainder of the game and the Warriors rallied for a 9-4 win to earn a sectional berth and reach Wednesday's region finals.

"Four in the first, that's not what you want," said Underwood, who hurled 6.1 innings and allowed two hits, walked two and struck out seven. "The hitters had to respond and I had to regain my composure too."

Riverdale (22-15) scored twice in the first and had solo runs in the second and third to tie thigs before taking the lead for good on Bradley Pippin's two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.

"Our offense has been insane all year," said Underwood, who was 2-for-3. "The last couple of games (the opponent) has put up runs in the first. I had faith in our offense. The run support has been awesome."

Riverdale will play the winner of Monday's region contest between Rockvale and host Stewarts Creek in Wednesday's region finals.

Siegel, Smyrna and Central Magnet captured district softball championships Thursday while Oakland, La Vergne and Central Magnet captured district soccer titles.

The Lady Stars won two games from Rockvale (9-1 ,10-0) to take the 7-4A softball title while Smyrna won the if-necessary game in the 8-4A tourney, defeating Stewarts Creek 8-3 after falling to the Lady Red Hawks 6-2 in the first game.

The Lady Tigers earned the first district title in program history with a 10-0 win over Hume-Fogg in the 10-3A championship.

Oakland edged Siegel 1-0 in the 8-3A soccer finals while La Vergne downed Smyrna 3-1 in the 7-3A championship. Central Magnet won a thriller over Page, 1-0 (4-3 in PKs), to win the 11-2A title.

Eagleville's baseball team captured the District 9-1A tournament title in easy fashion, knocking off Moore County 14-1 Wednesday. The Eagles will host the region semifinals Monday.

The Eagleville softball team will also advance to the region, thanks to a 7-0 win over Moore County in the 9-1A consolation finals. The Lady Eagles then fell 11-1 to Huntland in the championship game, sending them on the road Monday in the region semis.

Central Magnet's baseball team captured the District 10-3A tourney title, rolling past Martin Luther King Magnet 13-1.

Rockvale walked-off the 7-4A softball tournament winners bracket finals with an 11-10 win over Oakland Tuesday, earning the program's first region tournament berth and trip to the title game Thursday night.

The Lady Rockets will play the winner of Wednesday's Oakland-Siegel losers bracket final in Thursday's title game. Siegel shut out Riverdale 4-0 in the losers bracket Tuesday.

Riverdale's baseball team captured the District 7-4A tourney title with a 9-3 win over Rockvale. The Warriors will play host to 8-4A runner-up Smyrna on Monday while the Rockets travel to 8-4A champ Stewarts Creek Monday in region tournament elimination games.

Smyrna reached the 8-4A softball tournament championship game by knocking off rival and No. 1 seed Stewarts Creek 7-4. The Lady Red Hawks bounced back with a 12-0 win over La Vergne later in the evening to earn a trip to the finals and region berth. The two will play again Thursday in the championship game.

Monday

Stewarts Creek captured the 8-4A baseball tournament title and Rockvale earned the first region baseball berth in program history Monday night.

The Red Hawks secured a home region game with a 4-3 walk-off win over Smyrna in the tourney title game while the Rockets exploded for eight runs in the top of the eighth for an 11-3 win over Siegel to reach the 7-4A championship game.

Rockvale plays Riverdale Tuesday in the tournament title game.

In 7-4A softball, Oakland reached the tourney winners bracket finals with a 12-6 upset win over No. 1 seed Siegel. The Lady Patriots battle Rockvale Tuesday at 7 p.m. Riverdale, a 5-1 winner over Blackman Monday, will play Riverdale in the consolation bracket at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Stewarts Creek rolled in the 8-4A softball tourney, defeating La Vergne 24-0 and will play Smyrna in the winners bracket finals Tuesday at 6.

Eagleville reached Wednesday's championship game in the 9-1A tourney, winning on Kolten Daniel's walk-off RBI in the bottom of the seventh in a 1-0 win over Moore County.
