It's back-to-school time. While some area students have already returned to school, most are going back Sept. 5.

Changes, including new staff members and curriculum updates, will be seen in schools across the county. Some districts also have made changes to teacher professional development days.

Monroe Public Schools will continue to have shortened school days to accommodate professional development. This year, there will be fewer half days. But there will be eight two-hour late start days.

“We heard from parents that this schedule option is more family friendly for child care arrangements, and we listened,” Andrew Shaw, superintendent, said.

Like other districts across the state, Mason will have 20 days with one-hour late starts for teacher professional development.

“It will offer an uninterrupted block of time for teachers to engage in collaborative professional development. We firmly believe that the benefits of implementing these one-hour late start days for teachers (professional development) outweigh any potential inconvenience,” Kelli Tuller, superintendent, said.

The first late start day for Mason is Oct. 4.
