Area students place in weekend rodeo

May 16—Hats were flying around the arena at the Boone County Fairgrounds in Lebanon over the weekend for the Indiana High School Rodeo Association (IHSRA) rodeo and alumni rodeo.

Several students from Zionsville and Sheridan were among those competing throughout the weekend.

Emilia Lane of Zionsville took first place in barrel racing with a time of 14.977. Lane also came in fifth in breakaway roping, eighth in goat tying, and 13th in pole bending. Her brother, Craig Lane, competed in steer wrestling and came in third with a time of 11.040.

The Bourdon brothers, Joe and Evan, of Sheridan, competed in multiple events throughout the weekend. Evan Bourdon took third place in calf roping and fifth in steer wrestling. Joe Bourdon placed first in steer wrestling.

Their father, Chris Bourdon, said the IHSRA always loves coming to Lebanon because of its facilities and fans.

"The team there at the Boone County Fairgrounds are always first class," he said. "We love working with them. They're super accommodating to all of our needs and checking in throughout the weekend."

Chris Bourdon said the weekend went off without any problems, no major injuries, all of the animals were fine — all of the things you'd want in a good rodeo weekend.

The rodeo in Lebanon is the closest event local competitors get to compete in throughout their season. Being so close to where they live, Chris said it's great seeing those who come out to support them.

"It's enjoyable. It is fun that we bring so many friends and family and contestants," Chris said. "We had two kids from Zionsville in the competition, three kids from Sheridan came and competed so we saw a lot of Sheridan students come out. It was fun to see even faculty and staff from their individual school corporations coming out too. It's a hometown rodeo."

The students competing have two more rodeos before the National High School Finals Rodeo on July 17-23 in Gillette, Wyo.
