Area trio among PGCBL all-stars

Three area players were among the Utica Blue Sox and Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs honored by Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League coaches whose all-star selections for the 2022 season were announced Monday.

Blue Sox infielders Dewey Roden and Ryan Enos and DiamondDawgs pitcher Troy Butler were selected for two teams representing the summer collegiate league's 16 teams from across New York State. Two Hamilton College Continentals were also honored.

Roden is a Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School graduate who has one collegiate season at Le Moyne College as a graduate student after sitting out the spring season. He was chosen for the first team at first base.

Enos, a former Oriskany High School grad, is transferring from SUNY-Oswego to East Tennessee State University for his final year of college baseball. He was picked for the second team at second base.

Butler, a Fort Plain High School graduate, spent his freshman year at SUNY-Binghamton and is transferring to Herkimer College for his sophomore year and will help the Generals defend the NJCAA Division III championship. Butler joined Enos on the second team as one of the six starting pitchers.

The Watertown Rapids' Wyatt Parliament, a Section III standout in high school at LaFargeville and Thousand Islands, was also on the second-team pitching staff. Parliament graduated early from LaFargeville at midyear and pitched at Rutgers University in the spring. He joined his older brother Owen with the Rapids for the summer. Owen Parliament played was Butler's teammate at Binghamton in the spring.

The first team featured six players from PGCBL champion Amsterdam, including Player of the Year Gage Miller from Bishop State Community College at second base and Relief Pitcher of the Year Santhosh Gotham from Brown University. Nolan Sparks from the University of Rochester and the Batavia MuckDogs, the league's Pitcher of the Year, was also picked.

The individual awards were announced last week. Amsterdam's Keith Griffin was coach of the year after guiding the Mohawks to a league-best 39-6 regular season record on their way to their sixth championship in 11 years of PGCBL competition.

DiamondDawg Pete Durocher, an outfielder from Manhattan College, was picked for the first team along with Utica's Roden and Alex Canino, a pitcher form Limestone University; the Boonville Baseball Club's Dan Tauken, an outfielder from SUNY-Albany, and Scott Seeker, a utility choice transferring to Mount St. Mary's University from Western Oklahoma State College; and Oneonta Outlaw Devin Boone, another utility pick from Marist College.

The second team included Mohawk Valley's Garrett Musey, the league's home run champion from Goldey-Beacom College; Butler; Utica's Will King, a catcher from Eastern Kentucky University; Evan Esch, a starting pitcher from The University of St. Thomas; and Enos.

Boone, Durocher, Musey, Seeker and Tauken were midseason East Division All-Stars while Enos, Esch and Roden were West Division honorees.

Butler and Enos finished the summer on Cape Cod on opposite sides of that collegiate league's championship with Enos and the Bourne Braves defeating a Brewster Whitecaps team that was seeking a second consecutive title with Butler and pitcher Ryan Packard and coach Jason Rathbun from Herkimer. Butler started the rain-delayed first game of the best-of-three championship series, striking out eight batters while allowing one run on three hits over five innings in an eventual 3-0 Bourne victory. Bourne won again 8-1 the following day with Enos playing left field and driving in two runs with a first-inning single before adding a two-run home run in the sixth.

In PGCBL play, Butler started eight games and compiled a 4-3 record with a 3.21 ERA and 57 strikeouts in a team-high 42 innings. He tied Andres Hulfachor from the Niagara Power and Clark University for the league lead in strikeouts.Durocher hit .345 with three home runs, 38 runs batted in and 31 walks while scoring 47 runs in 44 games. Musey played 38 games and batted .307 with 11 of the team's 26 home runs, 42 runs batted in and 28 runs scored; he walked 18 times and was hit by 11 pitches.

Enos batted .346 in 29 games before departing for the Cape; he drove in 20 runs, scored 24 and reached base with 11 walks and 10 times hit by pitch while striking out nine times in 104 at-bats. Roden led the Blue Sox with a .351 average in 34 games had a team-high 26 runs batted in. King matched Enos with a .346 batting average in 23 games.

Canino made five starts and five relief appearances, winning two of his three decisions with a 1.32 ERA and 34 strikeouts and five walks in 40 2/3 innings. Esch won all four of his decisions in eight starts and finished with a 2.18 ERA and 36 strikeouts and six walks in 37 innings.

Boonville's Tauken finished third in the PGCBL batting race at .397 behind fellow first-team outfielder Aaron Whitley (.402) from the Newark Pilots and the University of Rochester, and Miller (.400). Tauken homered six times, drove in 29 runs and scored 36 times in 42 games. Seeker hit .344 with six home runs, 27 RBI and 26 runs scored in 30 games.

Boone batted .371, stole 33 bases in 34 attempts, and scored 30 runs in 36 games while playing for first-year coach Eric Downey who took over for former Herkimer Generals teammate John Boland during the season in Oneonta.

Hamilton's Shane Dux was the first-team selection at catcher from the Geneva Red Wings while school and summer teammate Jack Eshleman was a second-team pitcher. Dux was the leading hitter for Red Wings, batting .387 and driving in 21 runs while scoring 18 in 27 games. Eshlemen was 3-1, 2.16 in seven starts.
