Area under flash flood warning as storms move through

Jul. 16—Central Lackawanna County is under a flash flood warning until 5:15 p.m. as passing thunderstorms threaten more rain for an already waterlogged region, according to the National Weather Service.

Storms producing heavy rain may drop another inch this afternoon after earlier storms dumped between 1 1/2 to two inches. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly, the weather service said.

Areas that were expected to see flooding include Scranton, Waverly, Dunmore, Old Forge, Archbald, Dickson City, Moosic, Olyphant, Clarks Summit, Clarks Green, Elmhurst, Mount Cobb, Blakely, Taylor, Jessup and Throop, according to the weather service.

Lackawanna County 911 dispatchers received a wave of weather-related calls earlier today, with flooding around Pittston Avenue and Kane Street in Scranton being among the worst.

Scranton Police Capt. Dennis Lukasewicz said a few vehicles got stuck in high water there. He urged people not to drive through flooded streets.

A 911 supervisor expected more calls to come in as the storms move through. Other roads experiencing flooding are Green Ridge Street, Providence Road and Boulevard Avenue, according to the 911 center. To check road conditions, visit www.511pa.com.
