Area utility companies adjust billing for customers due to last week’s inclement weather

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Huntsville Utilities says it is cutting customers a break this week.

Due to last week’s winter weather, the utility company did not receive any incoming mail from its customers. Because of that, Huntsville Utilities is giving itself extra time to process incoming payments and customers extra time to pay their balances.

The utility company says it will not resume disconnecting services for non-payment until next Monday, Jan. 29. Late fees will be suspended through this week as well.

If you live in Athens, Athens Utilities is taking similar steps for its customers.

For the same weather-related reasons, Athens Utilities suspended disconnections and late fees last week.

A spokesperson for the City of Athens told News 19 that Athens Utilities will resume disconnections for non-payment, like Huntsville Utilities, on Jan. 29.

A spokesperson with Decatur Utilities tells News 19 the company does not disconnect services for non-payment when the temperature is 32 degrees or colder. However, the utility company did not specify whether it has waived late fees for customers due to the recent cold snap.

Decatur Utilities, like the others, urges you to call customer service and set up a payment arrangement or extension to avoid disconnection.

The City of Florence Utilities will continue to waive late payment penalties and non-payment disconnects for the rest of this week.
