Area volleyball roundup for Aug. 27: Wagner, Parkston square off at weekend tournament

Aug. 28—Saturday was full of action across the state for volleyball, including the round-robin Parkston Tournament, with three area teams taking the court. Here's a rundown of the action from Aug. 27.

PARKSTON, S.D. — Wagner and Parkston battled a close first set in an eventual-two-set sweep for Wagner on Saturday.

Wagner took the first set 25-22, before controlling the second set 25-12. Emma Yost had six kills and 14 digs for Wagner, while Avari Bruguier paced the team with seven kills, as well as two service aces. Setter Macy Koupal had 21 set assists and three kills of her own. For Parkston, Kiauna Hargens and Mya Nuebel tied for the team lead with four kills.

Both Wagner and Parkston also played McCook Central/Montrose in the event. MCM took down Parkston (25-19, 25-20) but fell to Wagner (25-16, 25-23). At the tournament, Parkston went 0-4, MCM went 1-3, Northwestern went 2-2, Wagner went 3-1 and Warner went 4-0.

Here's a look at the top performers from Saturday:

* Wagner's 3-1 showing in the Parkston Tournament was thanks in part to Macy Koupal, who had 80 set assists over the four matches, including 29 against Northwestern and a double-double with 13 assists and 10 digs against McCook Central/Montrose.

* Warner's Ava Nilsson helped lead her team to four wins in the Parkston Tournament, with 86 set assists over the matches. She also chipped in seven kills, seven services aces and 17 digs.

* Northwestern's Ella Haven had 42 kills for the Wildcats during their four matches at the Parkston Tournament and was named to the all-tournament team.

* Castlewood's Mackenzie Everson tallied 18 kills and 17 digs to lead the way in a 3-1 win over Sioux Valley, while Gracie Haug added 40 assists.
