Area volleyball roundup: Bridgewater-Emery sweeps Freeman, improves to 7-0

Sep. 15—EMERY — Fourth-ranked Bridgewater-Emery continued its strong start to the season with a three-set win over Cornbelt Conference rival Freeman Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21 and 25-23.

Bridgewater-Emery (7-0): Julia Weber had 19 kills and nine digs for the Huskies, with Taylor Schallenkamp scoring 10 kills in the win. Chloe Schmitt had eight kills and two blocks. Kaitlyn Roskens had 19 assists, and Casey Meyer posted 16 assists and two aces. Cara Meyer had a match-high 25 digs. Up next, Bridgewater-Emery visits Viborg-Hurley for a match in Viborg on Sept. 16.

Freeman (5-3): Kate Miller had 12 kills and 13 digs for the Flyers, who picked up eight kills, two blocks and 10 digs from Erin Uecker. Lily Wipf had seven digs and two aces and Ava Ammann had nine assists and 12 digs. Freeman heads to Tripp to take on Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Sept. 16.

Mitchell Christian 3, Marty 0

Mitchell Christian notched a three-set win over Marty on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-11, 25-14 and 25-14. It was MCS' second win over the Braves in the last four days after defeating Marty at the Wolsey-Wessington Tournament on Saturday.

Mitchell Christian (2-6): Whisper Eben led the Golden Eagles with 11 kills, nine ace serves and five digs. Kelsey Holdeman had nine kills while Keely O'Neill added 15 assists and three ace serves. Ashley Sport also chipped in with six ace serves. Mitchell Christian hosts Ethan on Sept. 20.

Marty (0-5): No stats were reported for the Marty Braves, who travel to Lower Brule on Sept. 16.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian 3, Scotland 2

LAKE ANDES — Andes Central/Dakota Christian yielded a 2-0 set lead on Tuesday night but won the decisive fifth set to earn a home win. Set scores were 25-18, 25-13, 25-27, 22-25, 15-7.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian (2-6): Allison Muckey and Abigail Svatos each had nine kills in the victory. Lexie VanderPol had seven kills and three blocks. Baylee Johnson and Svatos each had six aces apiece and Svatos had a match-high four blocks. The Thunder will be in the Cavalier Clash tournament on Sept. 18 in Tyndall.

Scotland (5-4): Scotland was paced by 11 kills from Delanie VanDriel, who also had four aces. Rylee Conrad had a match-high 33 assists, Martina DeBoer had nine kills and Trinity Bietz served up five aces for the Highlanders, who are off for a week prior to their Sept. 21 match hosting Freeman.

Wagner 3, Avon 1

AVON — Wagner picked up its seventh win of the season with a four-set victory over Avon on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 18-25 and 25-23.

Wagner (7-3): Emma Yost had 19 kills and 26 digs for Wagner. Kya Kjeldgaard had 15 kills while Shalayne Nagel had 11 kills and 14 digs. Macy Koupal added 44 assists, Madi Knebel had 22 digs and Lydia Yost added 14 digs. Wagner travels to Tyndall for the Cavalier Clash tournament on Sept. 18.

Avon (6-2): Tiffany Pelton had 16 kills while Courtney Sees had 12 kills, six digs and three ace serves. Katie Gretschmann had 24 digs and five ace serves while Sam Brodeen added nine digs. Makayla Kopp also added four ace serves and McKenna Kocmich added 23 assists and eight digs. Reese Powers, Sees, Pelton and Reece Loewe each had two blocks. Avon travels to the Cavalier Clash tournament on Sept. 18.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 3, Bon Homme 0

TRIPP — Tripp-Delmont/Armour defeated Bon Homme in straight sets on Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (4-2): Gracey Schatz had nine kills and two blocks, and Megan Reiner had 12 digs. Hannah Stremick had 26 assists, 13 digs and three ace serves, while Emma Fink added 11 digs. Tripp-Delmont/Armour travels to Freeman on Sept. 16.

Bon Homme (2-5): Olivia Bures had six kills, 14 digs and two ace serves while Erin Heusinkveld had 11 digs. Jenne Duffek added seven digs and two ace serves while Kenadee Kozak had eight digs. The Cavaliers travel to Irene-Wakonda on Sept. 16.

Hanson 3, Canistota 2

ALEXANDRIA — Hanson pulled out a close fifth set with Cornbelt Conference foe Canistota Tuesday night for a five set win at home. The Beavers won 25-22, 25-23, 17-25, 8-25 and 17-15.

Hanson (2-6): Annalyse Weber had 11 kills, 10 digs and three ace serves while Jalyn Kampshoff added 18 assists and 10 digs. Kate Haiar also had 10 digs, along with three blocks while Skylar Holm had 13 digs. Kylie Haiar added eight digs and Erin Dewald added two ace serves. Hanson travels to the Bridgewater-Emery tournament on Sept. 18.

Canistota (0-9): Sydnee Engbrecht had 15 kills, 17 digs and four ace serves, with Kayla Papendick posting 14 kills and a team-high 40 digs. Natalee Hofer had 25 assists, 10 digs and six ace serves for the Hawks. Presley Acheson had 22 digs and seven ace serves while Natalie Becker had 31 digs and Hannah Remacle had 15 digs. Canistota hosts Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Sept. 20.

Parkston 3, Corsica-Stickney 1

CORSICA — Parkston earned a four-set road win on Tuesday night over Corsica-Stickney. Set scores were 25-21, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-17.

Parkston (5-4): Mya Nuebel had 12 kills and 10 digs. Faith Oakley added 27 assists, 10 digs and four kills. Brielle Bruening had nine kills, 22 digs, three blocks and three aces. Allison Ziebart had seven kills, with Gracie Oakley and Abby Hohn each adding six kills and Hohn tallying five blocks. The Trojans now face Lennox on Sept. 16.

Corsica-Stickney (3-7): Rachel Gerlach had 12 kills and 17 digs for the Jaguars, who got 10 kills and 14 digs from Payton DeLange. Morgan Clites had a match-high 24 digs and nine kills. Sutten Eide had 37 assists, three aces and 13 digs in the loss. C-S now hosts Ethan on Sept. 16 in Corsica.

Madison 3, Ethan 0

MADISON — Madison won a three-set matchup to get its seventh win of the season over Ethan on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20 and 25-17.

Madison (7-4): Audrey Nelson had 15 kills and two blocks, Amanda Vacanti had 15 digs and Kylie Krusemark had 13 digs. Krusemark also had 24 assists and Maycee Theede had three ace serves. The Bulldogs host Vermillion on Sept. 16.

Ethan (2-4): Bella Nesheim had 10 kills and 14 digs while Hannah Bartscher had 12 digs. Ava Lingemann added nine assists and two ace serves. Ethan travels to Corsica-Stickney on Sept. 16.

Howard 3, Menno 1

HOWARD — Howard beat Menno in a four-set match at home on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-19, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-18.

Howard (3-3): Kate Conner had 10 kills and Piper Thompson had eight kills and 13 digs. Rylee Rudebusch had 21 digs and nine assists, plus Emma Rudebusch had 13 digs and 13 assists. Both Aleya Kizer and Katlin Schlim added 16 digs and Abby Aslesen added six ace serves. Howard travels to Chester Area on Sept. 16.

Menno (4-5): Bridget Vaith had 10 kills and Josephine Stokes had 10 kills and seven digs. Julia Buechler had 24 digs and two ace serves while Madelyn Kludt added 17 digs. Paityn Huber had 16 assists and 19 digs, Grace Nusz had 13 assists and seven digs, and Halle VanHove had 12 digs. Menno hosts Viborg-Hurley on Sept. 21.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 3, Kimball/White Lake 2

WHITE LAKE — Mount Vernon/Plankinton earned a road victory Tuesday night, claiming a back-and-forth five-set match. Set scores were 23-25, 21-25, 25-13, 25-9 and 15-8.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (7-1): Maria Baker had 20 kills and Shyla Tobin had 24 assists and two ace serves. Jocelyn Manzo added 28 digs for the Titans. Mount Vernon/Plankinton travels to McCook Central/Montrose on Sept. 20.

Kimball/White Lake (3-2): Dani Deffenbaugh had 15 kills and 10 digs while Harley Namanny had six kills, 10 digs and three ace serves. Ryann Nielsen had 15 assists, 10 digs, six kills and three blocks. Madison Heath added 15 digs. Kimball/White Lake hosts Winner on Sept. 16.

Winner 3, Lyman 0

WINNER — Winner defeated Lyman in straight sets on Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-15, 25-15 and 25-8.

Winner (5-1): Ellie Brozik, Jenna Hammerbeck and Aleya Miller each had four ace serves. Brozik added 12 kills and Hammerbeck added six digs. Alexis Klein had 19 assists for the Warriors. Winner travels to Kimball/White Lake on Sept. 16.

Lyman (2-10): Ellie Eriksen had six kills for the Raiders while Annie Brakke had 15 digs. Defensively, Rachel Hoffer had two blocks. Lyman plays Sully Buttes on Sept. 16.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Sanborn Central/Woonsocket swept Wessington Springs in straight sets in high school volleyball action on Friday. Set scores were 25-8, 25-17 and 25-21.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (10-2): Brooke Doering had 11 kills and eight digs while Trista White had 10 kills and 11 digs. Trista White had four ace serves and Ellie Evans had three ace serves. Defensively, Kennadie Ochsner had four blocks. SCW travels to Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Sept. 18.

Wessington Springs (4-3): Avery Orth had six kills and two blocks while Alyssa Grohs had 16 assists. Both Sarah Poncelow and Raylee Fagerhaug added 11 digs and Carissa Scheel had two ace serves. The Spartans host Crow Creek on Sept. 16.

Sioux Falls Christian 3. McCook Central/Montrose 0 in Sioux Falls: Class A No. 1-ranked Sioux Falls Christian looked the part against the Fighting Cougars on Tuesday, improving to 8-0. Set scores were 25-18, 25-11 and 25-21. The Chargers travel to Jackson, Minnesota on Sept. 16 to face Jackson County Central. MCM (3-8) hosts Beresford on Sept. 16 in Montrose.

Chamberlain 3, Todd County 0 in Mission: The Cubs went on the road and picked up a victory in Big Dakota Conference play. Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-14. Chamberlain (4-5) hosts West Central on Sept. 16, while Todd County (1-6) heads west to Little Wound on Sept. 16.

Irene-Wakonda 3, Freeman Academy/Marion 0 in Freeman: The Eagles won a volleyball match on the road in three straight sets on Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-9, 26-24 and 25-8. Irene-Wakonda (3-6) hosts Bon Homme on Sept. 16, while Freeman Academy/Marion (0-8) hosts Centerville on Sept. 16.
