Area volleyball roundup for Nov. 1: KWL staves off elimination with comeback from two-set deficit

Nov. 2—PLATTE, S.D. — Third-seeded Kimball/White Lake dropped the first two sets to sixth-seeded Bon Homme by a combined five points but responded to win each of the next three by a total of nine points and advance through the Region 5A quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Set scores were 22-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-23 and 16-14.

Dani Deffenbaugh posted 28 kills, 15 digs, three aces and one block to lead the Wildkats to the come-from-behind win, with Ryann Nielsen close behind at 21 kills, 12 digs and two aces. Madison Heath added 18 digs and three blocks and Cami Comfert put up 24 assists.

For Bon Homme (15-14), Taycee Ranek notched 19 kills, 25 digs and three aces, as Jaden Kortan had a hand in everything with four kills, 43 assists, six digs, three blocks and one ace. Jenna Duffek chipped in seven kills, 18 digs, two aces and one block and Erin Heusinkveld had six kills, 15 digs and six blocks.

In the second match of the night, No. 2 seed Platte-Geddes started strong and never looked back, breezing through the quarterfinals with a sweep of No. 7 seed Hanson. Set scores were 25-13, 25-13 and 25-16.

Karly VanDerWerff recorded 13 kills, eight digs, two blocks and two aces, while Regan Hoffman offered nine kills, three aces and 10 digs, which put her over 2,000 career digs. Avery DeVries put up 29 assists, nine digs, one block and one ace, with Cadence Van Zee tacking on seven kills, 10 digs and five aces.

For Hanson (10-17), Jalyn Kampshoff had two kills, nine assists, three digs and one ace, as Taziah Hawkins had a team-high four kills.

With the wins, Platte-Geddes (25-7) and Kimball/White Lake (20-9) will square off in one Region 5A semifinal on Thursday night for a place in the Class A SoDak 16. The two programs met two weeks ago in Kimball, with the Black Panthers going up 2-0 before the Wildkats came back to force a fifth set, which P-G won.

The other semifinal in the region features No. 1 Wagner (29-3) and No. 4 Mount Vernon/Plankinton (18-11), which defeated Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and Parkston, respectively, in the quarterfinals.

* Reagan Rus' 17-kill, 20-dig night paced Mount Vernon/Plankinton in a straight-set win over Parkston in the Region 5A quarterfinals. In the loss, the Trojans got 22 assists, 19 digs and one service ace from Faith Oakley.

* Wagner swept through Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in the Region 5A quarterfinals, with Emma Yost notching 10 kills and 17 digs, while Macy Koupal put up 27 assists, 11 digs and four service aces.

* Behind Ava Lingemann's 18 kills and 22 digs put with Marissa Storm's eight kills, 30 digs and three blocks, Ethan took out Howard in four sets. In the loss, Piper Thompson had nine kills, 21 digs and three aces for the Tigers.

* Adisyn Indahl led Burke to a straight-set win against Corsica-Stickney in the Region 5B quarterfinals, finishing with 12 kills, 15 digs, six aces and one block.

* McCook Central/Montrose eked out a five-set win over Madison in the Region 3A quarterfinals, as Brandy Pulse posted 16 kills, 22 digs and one ace, while Brianna Even and Maddy Lauck combined for 43 assists, 25 digs and four aces. In the loss, Madison's Audrey Nelson had 28 kills, nine digs, four blocks and three aces.

* Gregory took down Andes Central/Dakota Christian in a sweep in the Region 5B quarterfinals, led by Cassidy Keiser's 16 kills, 13 digs, two blocks and one ace alongside 28 assists, 11 digs, three aces and three blocks by Jordan Svatos.

* Kate Miller and Erin Uecker combined for 24 kills, 19 digs, three service aces and two blocks, as Freeman cruised to a sweep of Irene-Wakonda in the Region 4B quarterfinals.

* Martina DeBoer posted 10 kills, 28 digs, four blocks and two aces as Scotland outlasted Alcester-Hudson in five sets in the Region 4B quarterfinals. In the loss, Ella Serck had 45 assists and 24 digs for the Cubs.

* Wessington Springs got 16 kills, 14 digs, four blocks and one ace from Avery Orth and 27 assists, six digs and one ace from Alyssa Grohs, as the Spartans won in straight sets over Avon in the Region 5B quarterfinals. In the loss, Courtney Sees had 14 kills and 17 digs, with McKenna Kocmich chipping in 17 assists, 16 digs and two aces.

* Megan Reiner posted 15 kills, 15 digs and two aces, while Hannah Stremick put up 19 assists, 11 digs, three aces and one block in Tripp-Delmont/Armour's straight-set win over Colome.
