Volleyball: Arlington, Florence-Henry win divisions in Sanford Pentagon Invite

Here is the area high school volleyball schedule for Sept. 19-24 (Results from matches will be updated throughout the week)

Saturday's Matches

Sanford Pentagon Invite: Area teams Arlington and Florence-Henry each won their divisions during the 34-team Sanford Pentagon Invitational volleyball tournament on Saturday. Complete scores were not available.

Arlington (14-7) won the White Division, posting 2-0 wins over Mount Vernon-Plankinton, Ethan and Gayville-Volin before downing Sioux Valley 2-0 (25-22, 25-23) in the bracket championship. Sioux Valley (12-5) posted 2-0 wins over Irene-Wakonda and Parker and a 2-1 win over Freeman.

In the Black Division, Florence-Henry (13-3) downed Hitchcock-Tulare 2-0 (25-16, 25-6) and then notched 2-0 bracket wins over Canistota (25-9, 25-18) and Hanson (25-18, 25-11) before topping Howard 2-1 (26-28, 25-15, 25-18) in the championship.

Reese Schmidt recorded 77 assists and more than 50 digs in the four matches for the Falcons. Caylin Kelly tallied 33 kills, Macey Lane more than 60 digs and Trinity Watson more than 20 kills and more than 18 digs.

Milbank Area (10-6) went 3-1 and finished third in bracket play. The Bulldogs beat Alcester-Hudson 2-0 and Winner 2-1 before losing to Howard 2-0. Milbank bounced back to top Hanson 2-1 in the third-place match.

In the Orange Division, Hamlin went 1-3. The Chargers (13-3) opened with a 2-1 win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland before losing 2-1 to Dell Rapids. In bracket play, Hamlin suffered 2-0 losses to Platte-Geddes and Rapid City Christian.

Deubrook Area at James Valley Christian: The Dophins (9-5) downed James Valley Christian 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-13 and 25-13) and Freeman Academy-Marion 3-0 (25-11, 25-15 and 25-20) in a tournament hosted by James Valley. Complete scores were not available.

Tiospa Zina at Wessington Springs: The Wambdi (1-12) lost to Wessington Springs 2-1 (25-11, 24-26, 25-15) and Jones County 2-0 (25-20, 25-21) in the Spartan Invitational Volleyball Tournament. Complete scores were not available.

Thursday's Matches

Watertown 3, Mitchell 1: Emily Tisher smacked 13 kills and Kendall Paulson and Emery Thury each eight to lead the Arrows to the 25-19, 22-25, 26-24 and 25-17 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory. Paulson also went 20-21 serving.

Miranda Falconer was 18-21 serving with two aces and 19 assists and Addi Johnston 8-10 serving. Grace Corey contributed 20 assists and 22 digs, Maddy Rohde 14 digs, Eve Hauger eight block assists and Carter Jurrens six block assists.

Watertown travels to Brookings on Tuesday.

Great Plains Lutheran 3, Waverly-South Shore 0: The host Panthers won 25-14, 25-9 and 25-18 to improve to 5-11. The Coyotes slipped to 2-12.

Olivia Holmen tallied 10 kills and two blocks, Kim Goens six aces and six kills, Kaitlyn Rawerts 11 assists, Maddy Prahl eight kills, Grace Powers nine digs and Kyrie Roberts two aces, 15 assists and 11 digs for GPL.

Redfield 3, Milbank 2: Redfield (9-4, 5-0) prevailed in the Northeast Conference match 17-25, 25-15, 27-25, 23-25 and 15-10 with 22 kills from Gracie Fast, five aces from Mallory Smith, 18 digs from Ashlyn Clausen, 16 digs from Chloe Zens and four solo blocks and one block assist from Katie Rozell.

Milbank (7-5, 3-2) received 13 kills and 33 digs from Rachael Schulte, five aces and 19 digs from Hallie Schulte, three aces from Addisyn Krause, 30 assists from Averie Engebretson and nine kills, one solo block and six block assists from Claire Snaza.

Arlington 3, Dell Rapids St. Mary 1: Natalie Burns smacked 16 kills and Morgan Larsen 15 to carry Arlington (10-7, 3-1) to the 25-21, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-20 Dakota Valley Conference win. Burns also added two aces. Tanaya Weiss chipped in with 43 assists and three aces, Addie Steffensen 20 digs and Harley Johnson 14 digs.

St. Mary (5-6) was led by Mya Heinitz with 15 kills and 23 digs, Ella Griffin 19 kills and nine digs, Brianna Griffin 11 kills and three aces and Brianna Lindeman 38 assists and 15 digs.

Hamlin 3, Webster Area 0: Hamlin won 25-8, 25-14 and 25-11 in the Northeast Conference, improving to 12-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Webster Area fell to 9-5 and 4-3.

Kami Wadsworth made 34 assists, Addie Neuendorf three aces, Grace Opdahl three aces and 10 digs, Ally Abraham 13 kills, Emily Everson nine kills and Ava Prouty 13 digs for the Chargers.

Webster Area leaders included Baylie Somsen, 10-12 serving with two assists and 11 digs; Elliott Steiner, five assists; Gracie Cadwell, nine kills and Jersey Johnson, 14 digs.

Clark-Willow Lake 3, Deuel 1: The Cyclones won the Northeast Conference match 25-17, 19-25, 25-20 and 25-18 with nine digs and two aces from Avery Lee, eight assists from Sami Brenden, four kills from Haylee Tormanen, eight digs from Audrye Foster and five blocks from Haylee Torman.

CWL improved to 5-8 and 1-3. Deuel slipped to 5-9 and 2-4.

Deubrook Area 3, Estelline-Hendricks 1: Deubrook Area (7-5, 3-2) took the Dakota Valley Conference match 25-22, 16-25, 25-16 and 25-22. Leaders were Miranda Moravetz with two aces, eight kills and 12 digs; Brooke Koppatschek 18 assists; Ellie Koenig 10 assists; Skyla Petersen nine kills; Zoey Molengraaf three blocks; and Delaney Pedersen, 30 digs.

The Redhawks (12-5, 2-2) got 27 assists from Sophie Johnson, two aces and 41 digs from Maddy Ebbers, six assists and nine kills from Brooke Johnson, four kills and 34 digs from Julie Williams, two blocks from Claire Dagel and 17 kills, four blocks and 35 digs from Kenzy Beare.

Tri-State 3, Wilmot 0: Tri-State won the Eastern Coteau Conference match 25-13, 25-18 and 25-11 over Wilmot (3-10).

Northwestern 3, Waubay-Summit 0: Second-rated Class B Northwestern (12-5) won 25-4, 25-4 and 25-12 with five aces, 17 kills and seven digs from Ella Haven; five aces, six kills and 21 assists from Brooklinn Halverson; seven aces, four assists and six from Payton Grandpre; and six kills and eight digs from Ashley Haven.

Waubay-Summit slipped to 2-12.

Elkton-Lake Benton 3, Colman-Egan 1: Rachael Krog's 18 kills and 20 digs guided Elkton-Lake Benton (11-2, 4-0) to the 25-22, 21-25, 25-10 and 25-22 Dakota Valley Conference victory. Kailyn Drietz added nine kills and 24 digs, Kylie Ramlo nine kills and 10 digs, Andrea Renkley nine kills and seven block assists, Aubree Bales seven block assists, Kayla Goetz 12 digs and Tevan Erickson 41 assists and 16 digs.

Kadance Landis produced 16 kills, Daniela Lee 21 digs, Lanie Mousel 20 assists and 16 digs, Ava Mousel 12 assists, Presley Luze 14 digs and Brynlee Landis 13 digs, three solo blocks and three block assists for Colman-Egan (9-4, 3-2).

Leaders for the Warriors included Maddie Horn, 12 aces and 10 digs, Mackenzie Everson, four aces and 12 kills, Gracie Haug 19 assists and 12 digs, Chloe Ribstein four kills and Kailyn Larson 12 digs.

Kyrie Roberts paced the Panthers (4-11) with six assists and 10 digs. Esta Cameron notched four kills and 14 digs, Grace Powers nine digs, Olivia Holmen four kills and Emma Dornbusch two blocks.

Sioux Valley 3, Milbank 0: Landree Wilson recorded 12 kills, Adison Renkly eight and Ashley Bjerke and Kaedyn Sapp each six to lead the Cossacks (9-4) past the Bulldogs (7-4) 25-18, 25-14 and 25-20.

Bjerke added 14 assists and eight digs, Sapp 23 digs, Renkly six digs, Talya Vincent 18 digs and Sunny Hesby 13 assists.

Northwestern 3, Leola-Frederick Area 0: Brooklinn Halverson notched her 2,000th career assist and Ella Haven her 1,000th career kill to lead second-rated Class B Northwestern to the 25-5, 25-5 and 25-10 victory. Halvorson tallied 22 assists, 10 digs and five aces and Haven 18 kills, three aces, eight digs and one solo block and one block assist. Payton Grandpre added three aces and four assists and Ashley Haven eight kills.

Laura Sumption made five kills and six digs, Jocelynn Ellwein seven assists and Chloe Arneson three digs for the Titans (7-12).

Aberdeen Christian 3, Waubay-Summit 1: Aberdeen Christian (1-15) broke into the win column, taking the match 25-16, 14-25, 25-20 and 25-23.

Hamlin 3, Estelline-Hendricks 2: The Chargers pushed their record to 11-0 by rallying for a 21-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17 and 16-14 win over the 12-4 Redhawks.

Ally Abraham recorded her 1,000th career kill with 20 kills and two blocks and Gracelyn Leiseth added 17 kills and two blocks for Hamlin, which also got 51 assists from Kami Wadsworth and two aces and 20 digs apiece from Ava Prouty and Addie Neuendorf.
