Area wrestlers pin down league titles, CIF-Southern Section berths

Area high school wrestlers took home individual league titles and qualified for the CIF-Southern Section Individuals over the weekend.

At the Pacific View League boys wrestling finals Saturday at Channel Islands High, Rio Mesa finished with six league champions and nine overall CIF qualifiers.

Winning titles were Matt Hernandez (106 pounds), Jay Alonso (152), Crispin Agraz (170), Konrad Fenlon (195), Anthony Garcia (285), and Anthony Soliz (220).

Edguardo Cruz (120) took second, Julian Vargas (138) was third, and John Kuske (113) will be a CIF alternate for the Spartans.

Rylan Pedroza (113), Charley Newman (138) and John Miller (160) earned league titles for Buena.

Nathan Aguilera (145), Cody Collins (152), Tyler Gardner (170) and Andres Ray (195) each took second, Jacob Markley (120), Brady Padilla (126) and Diego Solano (220) all placed third, and David Lopez (132) and David Arambola (285) finished as CIF alternates for the Bulldogs.

Chris Egbert (120), Josh Smith (126) and Parker Howe (132) all won titles for Ventura.

Ethan Dorsey (138), Elijah Flores (182) and Clayton Lee (220) each finished second, Josh Harber (113), Daniel Bundle (152) Nico Aradi (160), Caesar Chavez (170) and Adrian Opolka (285) all finished third, and Nydle Brant (145) earned alternate CIF status for the Cougars.

For Oxnard, Zerek Zeman (182) won the 182-pound title. Javel Hutton (106) and Cervando Tapia (113) each finished second, Hector Medina (145) was third, and Andrew Ortega (138) will be a CIF alternate for the Yellowjackets.

Timothy Burke won the 145-pound title for Channel Islands. Alex Torres (106) and Emmanuel Martinez (132) each placed third and Jeremy Marquez (152) and Jorge Gonzalez (182) earned alternate status for CIF.

Pacifica's Jacob Flores (160), Derek Arbues (132) and Angel Ruiz (126) all placed second in their weight classes to qualify for CIF. Guillermo Delago (195) will be a CIF alternate.

In the girls tournament, Pacifica had 12 CIF qualifiers. Kaylee Hernandez was the 150-pound champion and was named the Upper Weight MVP. Yorsely Hernandez (121), Jasmin Esquivias (126), Destiny Rodriguez (131), Ashley McCullum (143), Lupe Salas (189), Ale Sakala (235), and Lulu Lazo (170) all won league titles.

Samantha Salazar (111) placed second and Heidi Hernandez (137) was third and Aida Secundino (106) and Alejandra Flores (160) are CIF alternates for the Tritons.

For Ventura, Elisa Safigaski (101), Breanna Dolin (111), Candace Base (116) and Bella Smith (136) won individual titles.

Hannah Benson (106), Avalynn Ramos (121), Danielle Padilla (131), Hailey Padilla (143), Analea Moon (150), Sarah San Bartolome (160), and Elizeth Guerra (170) finished second. Melissa Shawgo (189) took third place for the Cougars.

Donna Arellano won the 160-pound title and Natalie Cervantes (189) finished second for Rio Mesa.

Ana Rodriguez won the 106-pound title and Keyra Cruz (101) finished third for Channel Islands.

Rubi Morales (101), Metzley Lopez (116) and Aaliyah Rios (137) each placed second, Elana Regalado (106) was third, and Mia Ulc (126) earned CIF alternate status for Oxnard.

Yulissa Banderos (121), Sofia Kawano (126) and Taylor Root (160) all finished third for Buena to qualify for CIF.

Coastal Canyon League

Camarillo had eight individual champions at the Coastal Canyon League finals at Camarillo High on Saturday.

Brayden Kuskie (113), Emilio Medina (126), Daniel Simons (132), Nicolas Navarrete (145), Ethan Paredes (152), Daniel Gurovich (170), Miles Kline (220), and Hunter Hall (285) captured individual titles for the Scorpions.

Brandon Soto (106), Arturo Alfaro (120), Andrew Gonzalez (138) and Colin Tipton (182) each finished second in their weight classes. Samuel Gonzalez (160) took third.

Royal finished with five champions: Mason Carrillo (106), Aidan Hansen (138), Nicholas Madrigal (160), William Fulgentes (182), and Calvin Velasco (195).

Andrew Fazeli (113), Sergio Montano (126), Cooper O'Neil (132), Kirk Benjamin (145), Peter Flugentes (220), and Jared Paz (285) each took second place for the Highlanders. Jacob Dominguez (152) finished third.

Moorpark's Logan Andrews won the 120-pound weight class. Evan Williamson (170) took second and Kyle Sims (182) and Nicholas Andrade (285) each placed third for the Musketeers.

For Simi Valley, Neo Nero (152) and Degan Morlan (160) each finished second and Peekay Schwab (120), Lovejit Gaur (126), Landon Halem (132), and Jacob Bond (138) all had third-place finishes.

In the girls tournament, Sunny Halub (101) and Ireland Donnelly (116) of Royal and Leslie Barragan (121) of Camarillo won individual titles.

Marmonte League

On Friday at the Marmonte League finals at Thousand Oaks High, Alan Smith won the 122-pound division for his fourth individual league title and was named the Outstanding Lightweight for the Lancers.

Jackson Riggio (108), Andrew Sedeno (128), James Rocha (154), Robert Svitek (184) and heavyweight Logan Shumaker each captured titles for Thousand Oaks, which won the team league championship during the regular season. Dennis Ritterbush of Thousand Oaks was named the Coach of the Year.

For Westlake, Oliver Thompson (115), Lennon Martin (134), Landon Tofanelli (140), and Odin Kenworthy (147) took home league titles.

Caden Terry (160) and Jack Yasui (220) of Newbury Park captured league titles.

Derrick Arcudi (172) won his weight class and was named Outstanding Heavyweight and Micah Kokin (197) won a title for Calabasas.

Finishing second were Jeremy Kokin (108), Matt Baum (115) and Michael Romero (140) of Calabasas; Owen Greding (122), Brandon Bauman (128), Terrence Waddell (172), Dylan Druain (184) and heavyweight Carson Berry of Newbury Park; Will Ramos (134) and Tanner Cardenas (147) of Thousand Oaks; Liam Hejazi (154), Evan Vallens (160) and Hunter Spiegler (197) of Westlake; and Adam Bahir (220) of Agoura.

In the girls wrestling tournament, Talia Smith (102) and Lily Tunnell (123) of Thousand Oaks, Mackenzie English (108) of Westlake, and Emma Sardell (145) of Calabasas won individual titles.
