Feb. 24—WILLMAR — Whether it's a strong Class AA team or a top-10 team in AAA, Willmar keeps finding a way to win.

The Cardinals, ranked third in Class AAA, opened their home triangular with a 67-10 victory over Perham. Then in the main event, Willmar held off a late charge by Waconia to win, 31-27.

The Yellowjackets are in the Lean and Mean in Class AA while the Wildcats are ranked sixth in Class AAA.

With the 2-0 showing, Willmar is now 19-1 in duals this season.

In the opener against Perham, the Cardinals opened on a high note as Ivan Ciriaco-Mares scored a third-period takedown that proved to be the difference in an 8-7 decision at 106 over Chandler Mickelson, who is ranked 10th in Class AA. That was followed with bonus points as Conlan Carlson got a fall at 113 and Sully Anez scored a major decision at 120.

From 132-to-160, the Cardinals got 30 points as Steven Cruze and Caden Carlson got back-to-back falls at 132 and 138, followed by three straight forfeits.

At 195, Kaden Streed got into a high-scoring battle with Gordon Enyart. Down by two points late in the third, Streed got a reversal as time expired to tie the match at 13-13. In the 1-minute overtime period, Streed wasn't content with a takedown as he ended up sticking Enyart to the mat at 6:47 for the fall and six points.

Willmar closed the match with two more falls from Mason Swanson at 220 and Taggert Reynolds at 285.

The Cardinals are back at home Thursday for a Central Lakes Conference triangular with Fergus Falls and Sauk Rapids.
