Area Wrestling: Three Watertown wrestlers capture individual titles in Mitchell tourney

MITCHELL — A short-handed Watertown High School wrestling team crowned three individual champions and placed fourth out of nine teams on Saturday in the Jerry Opbroek Invitational wrestling tournament.

Pierre claimed the title with 185 points, followed by Sturgis at 172, Rapid City Stevens 163.5, Watertown 163 and Mitchell 188.5. The Arrows had a number of regulars out of their lineup with a combination of illness and injuries.

Sloan Johannsen improved to 26-0 on the season with three more wins, including a 10-4 victory over Parkston’s Kaden Holzbauer in the 113-pound championship.

Connor Hanson also went 3-0 at 126 and took home the title with an 8-6, sudden victory over Nate Williams of Pierre in the championship. Hanson is 23-5 on the season.

Draven Bau won the 220-pound title, going 3-0 with three falls including one over Sturgis’ Zak Juelfs in 4:37 of their championship match. Bau is now 16-4.

Weston Everson (120), Carson Hansmann (138), Mac Young (182) and Brock Eitreim (195) each finished second for the Arrows.

Everson went 2-1 on the day and fell to Stevens’ Jack Schoenhard 7-2 in the championship. Hansmann recorded two falls before losing by fall in 2:56 to Pierre’s Blake Judson in the finals.

Young had three falls before dropping a 5-1 decision to Mitchell’s Joe Van Overschelde in the 182-pound championship. Eitreim had two falls before losing to Sturgis’ Aiden Werlinger 3-0 in the finals.

Battler Invite

GETTYSBURG — Haeden Jorgenson and Cael Larson of Webster Area and Lucas Kannegieter of Clark-Willow Lake each captured individual championships Saturday in the Battler Invitational wrestling tournament.

South Border (N.D.) topped the 20-team field with 264 points. Webster Area was third with 120, Clark-Willow Lake fourth with 112 and Deuel sixth with 85.

Jorgenson (15-9) capped a 3-0 day with a 5-3 overtime victory over Cade Martian of Harding County in the 120-pound championship.

Larson improved to 29-0 by going 4-0 to win the 138-pound championship, winning by fall over Tristan Lepp of South Shore in 1:28 in the finals.

Kannegieter recorded three falls on the day, including one over Dominic Constant of Deuel in 1:47 to win the 170-pound title. Kannegieter is now 20-4 on the season.

Other area place winners were:

Webster Area — Tacey Miller, 2nd at 106; Caleb McGregor, 2nd at 220; Trace Shoemaker, 3rd at 126; and Cole Shoemaker, 6th at 160.

Clark-Willow Lake — Gunnar Kvistad, 2nd at 152; Cooper Pommer, 4th at 106; Ethan McElhone, 4th at 138; Kasey Michalski, 4th at 182; Jerome Enbodden, 5th at 195; and Hunter Wren, 6th at 170.

Deuel — Constant, 2nd at 170; Korbin Whiteley, 3rd at 152; Justin Granum, 3rd at 195; Jaxon Quail, 4th at 132; and Gavin Kloos, 6th at 126.

Tri-Valley Invite

LYONS — Hamlin-Castlewood placed three wrestlers and scored 62 points to finish 11th out of 17 teams in the Tri-Valley Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Winner took the team title by a 239.5-227 margin over Canton.

Chase Chambers finished third at 145 pounds to lead Hamlin-Castlewood. Brock Gisselbeck (138) and Troy Randall Jr. (152) each took sixth.

Harrisburg Girls Tournament

HARRISBURG — Annie Witt of Webster Area won the 154-pound division and Dani Batchelor of Clark-Willow Lake finished second at 113 in the Harrisburg Girls Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

Pierre took the 21-team tourney with 124 points. Webster Area was eighth (31.5) and Clark-Willow Lake 17th (20).

Witt went 5-0 with five falls in the tourney. Batchelor went 3-1 with two falls.
