Boil water advisory lifted for Patton, Ferguson townships Wednesday morning

The boil water advisory that was in effect for parts of State College was lifted early Wednesday morning.

The advisory was lifted at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to the State College Borough Water Authority’s website.

“Following the recent water line repairs, the results of water samples collected found it safe to drink. All residents impacted by the advisory no longer need to boil their water before consuming it,” the website states.

In an email, Executive Director Brian Heiser said the boil water notice would remain in place until the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection approves a water sample and gives permission to lift notice.

Residences along more than 150 streets in the State College area were placed under a boil water advisory Monday after two water main breaks occurred at North Oak Lane and Patton Lane, and another at Carnegie Drive and Driftwood Drive. The State College Borough Water Authority wrote in a notice that many streets may be at an increased risk from microbial contamination.

Patton Township experienced two water main breaks Monday — one at North Oak Lane and Patton Lane, and another at Carnegie Drive and Driftwood Drive.

“We routinely monitor the conditions in the distribution system. On Aug. 28, 2023, we experienced a loss of positive water pressure due to equipment failure. A loss of positive water pressure is a signal of the existence of conditions that could allow contamination to enter the distribution system through back-flow by back-pressure or back-siphonage. As a result, there is an increased chance that the water may contain disease-causing organisms,” the notice stated.

Residents in the impacted areas (a full list of streets can be seen below) were cautioned not to drink water without boiling it first.

The notice stated water that is inadequately treated may contain “disease-causing organisms,” which include bacteria, viruses and parasites and can cause nausea, cramps, diarrhea and headaches.

“These symptoms, however, are not caused only by organisms in drinking water, but also by other factors,” SCBWA wrote in the notice. “If you experience any of these symptoms and they persists, you may want to seek medical advice.”

Some schools within the State College Area School District, including Gray’s Woods Elementary, Park Forest Elementary and Park Forest Middle Schools were impacted by the advisory and were without water fountains and refill stations during this time. Families were urged to send water bottles to school with their children.
