Areas of Santa Cruz County coastline experiencing flooding, evacuation warning

(KRON) — Coastal areas near Aptos in Santa Cruz County are experiencing flooding Thursday morning as a high surf warning and high tides impact Central and Northern California. An evacuation warning was issued near Seacliff State Beach, according to Santa Cruz County officials.

The evacuation warning was issued for zone CTL-E048 at around 8:30 a.m., which is near Seacliff State Beach in Aptos. “Be prepared to leave should an evacuation order be issued,” Santa Cruz County said. County officials urge residents to know their zone through the Zonehaven website.

Pajaro Dunes, zone CRZ-E070, was added to the evacuation warning just after 10 a.m., according to Santa Cruz County officials.

A temporary evacuation point has been set up at New Brighton Middle School on 250 Washburn Avenue in Capitola. There are signs at the school and water and power are available, officials said.

Rio Del Mar Esplanade is flooded at the coast, the California Highway Patrol Santa Cruz division said in a tweet. “Please avoid the area and do not attempt to drive across flooded areas,” CHP said. Authorities advise motorists to drive with caution and not to go around road closures that are in effect.

The Santa Cruz Wharf, along with Main and Cowell beaches have been closed until further notice, the Santa Cruz Police Department announced just before 10 a.m. West Cliff Road is closed between Columbia Street and David Way as part of an urgent coastal advisory from the City of Santa Cruz.

Debris that has made its way onto Highway 1 at Waddell Creek in northern Santa Cruz County is being removed by Caltrans crews, the agency shared just after 11 a.m. Highway 1 remains open to travel at this time.
