Argentina's President Javier Milei has announced his intention to convene a summit aimed at bolstering Latin American support for Ukraine, as revealed in a Financial Times interview on Feb. 28.

This move marks a clear divergence from the more neutral stances of other regional leaders like Brazil's Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Mexico's Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Milei emphasized his alignment with nations that "defend freedom," including the United States, Israel, and Ukraine. This announcement comes alongside the reminder of Argentina's recent donation of two Russian-made Mi-171E multipurpose helicopters to Ukraine, initially acquired for missions in Antarctica but later deemed unsuitable due to inspection failures attributed to issues from the Russian side and subsequent sanctions against Russia.

Milei was elected president of Argentina on Nov. 19, 2023.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Milei, during which the latter proposed hosting a summit in Latin America to address Russia's war against Ukraine.

Zelenskyy took part in Milei's inauguration ceremony in Buenos Aires on Dec. 10. He also expressed confidence that bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Argentina will continue to expand.
