Argument preceded fatal shooting of man on northeast side, court records say

An argument between neighbors preceded the shooting of a man on the northeast side of Indianapolis this week, according to court records.

Police arrested Cynthia Lewis on a preliminary murder charge in the killing of 23-year-old Deante McKinzie, who died May 17 after being shot in the chest.

Indianapolis police were called to the shooting, reported in the 3400 block of East 38th Street, and later told the victim was being taken to a nearby hospital. Officers found the car at the hospital and saw blood in the back seat. In the area where the shooting happened, police found two shell casings, one fired bullet and more blood.

A preliminary probable cause affidavit detailing Lewis’ arrest said interviews with multiple witnesses led to her jailing in McKinzie’s death.

The witnesses told police they saw an argument erupt between McKinzie’s girlfriend and Lewis, who are neighbors. The account was corroborated by McKinzie’s girlfriend. Court records do not specify what the argument was about.

The fight ended, but a short time later, McKinzie returned outside and got angry after seeing Lewis sitting on his car. One witness described she was “jumping” on the vehicle. Lewis is then said to have taken out a gun.

One witness told police they heard McKinzie say he “don’t care about no gun,” before they heard a gunshot. McKinzie then ran toward a house and collapsed next to the front door.

Friday, police took Lewis into custody.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges.
