Argus Leader moving from historic location in downtown Sioux Falls to northwest side

The Argus Leader newsroom is moving from its historic location at 200 S. Minnesota Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls after nearly 70 years occupying the same space.

The move, which is set to complete throughout the next week, shifts the reporting team almost one and a half miles northwest of its former location to a new space at 710 N. Western Avenue near the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.

Two years ago, the Argus Leader's printing press plant closed operations in Sioux Falls, and printing of physical paper copies of the Argus Leader, Aberdeen American News and Watertown Public Opinion moved to Des Moines, Iowa to be delivered overnight to South Dakota.

In August 2022, it was announced that the Argus Leader would continue to lease part of the second floor from the new owner of the building at 200 S. Minnesota Ave., Ron Rensberger, who bought the building from the Argus Leader's parent company, Gannett, in May 2022.

Now, the team of seven to 10 reporters will join the rest of its distribution team in a space more conducive to the newsroom's needs. The distribution team has been in the new space for much of last year and recently transitioned to mail delivery through the U.S. Postal Service.

The Argus Leader staff currently includes news director Shelly Conlon, Farm Forum editor/agriculture and environment reporter Dominik Dausch, education reporter Morgan Matzen, city government reporter Trevor Mitchell, state politics reporter Annie Todd, sports reporter Jonathan Fernandez, and visual journalist Samantha Laurey.

The Argus Leader is currently hiring for a trending entertainment and culture reporter, real estate and development reporter, and a breaking news reporter, all of whom will join the newsroom in its new location when they are hired.

The Argus Leader was born from two different newspapers published in Sioux Falls in the 1800s. In 1887, the Sioux Falls Argus bought out the Sioux Falls Leader, creating the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

A fire destroyed the Argus Leader building at 109 N. Main St. in April 1951, moving the newspaper’s printing operations to the Mitchell Daily Republic for a short time. The Argus moved into its current building on Minnesota Ave. in February 1954.
