Ariana Grande's New "7 Rings" References Her Exes, Apartment, Ponytail, and More

We might still be reeling from the epicness that was Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next," but the pop star has returned again, releasing a brand new video for single "7 Rings."

The song — which Ariana teased on social media for days — is a heavily rap-infused take on the classic song "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music. It's Broadway, but done Ari style, which is to say it's full of pink furry coats, glamorous parties, and allusions galore.

Based around the story of diamond friendship rings, the singer previously detailed how important this particular track was to her, telling Billboard in an interview that she wrote "7 Rings" after a particularly hard day. "Me and my friends went to Tiffany’s together, just because we needed some retail therapy," she said. "We bought seven engagement rings, and when I got back to the studio I gave everybody a friendship ring.” As for the lucky recipients of those diamond friendship rings? Ariana revealed all in a tweet, writing, "me, vic, courtney, alexa, tayla, njomza, kaydence (and my mom and nonna so technically nine but they got theirs after song was done)."

Much like the previous release of "Thank U, Next," Ari also packed this song and video with loads of references to everything from her personal life to her future new music. In case you were too busy bopping along or dreaming of your own diamond friendship ring, here are all the references you might have missed.

Spotted: Ari's dog Toulouse

According to a tweet from Ariana, "T wasn't originally supposed to be in this video but he literally wouldn't leave me / set / the shot so." Toulouse also appeared in the "Thank U, Next" video in a cameo as Bruiser, Elle Woods's infamous pup — seems like Toulouse is just used to show business now. He even gets his own pink doghouse.

A future song...written in spray paint

As eagle-eyed fans pointed out, in one part of the "7 Rings" music video, the word "NASA" is scrawled in spray paint. "NASA" also popped up on a leaked track listing a few months ago, so it seems legit that it'll be on her new record.

The subject matter makes sense: Ari's love of space and the solar system is well-documented. In May, she wrote on her Instagram Story, "Jupiter can, like, get it. Earth is shaking. Jupiter, you're major."

Connections to "Thank U, Next"

We already know where we've heard part of "7 Rings" before — in the opening to the "Thank U, Next" video, during its Mean Girls homage. But it turns out that "7 Rings" is also supposed to have a connected energy to the video that slaughtered the Internet.

Ariana previously explained what the vibe of "7 Rings" is meant to feel like in comparison to its sister track, "Thank U, Next." "Guess thank u, next is more vulnerable and gentle lol. seven rings is jus like ..... a flex. friendship anthem. how the homies WANT u to feel. what the ‘thank u next’ energy evolves into while embracing a new chapter (even tho both moods /energies are v present)," she tweeted.

Energy isn't the only thing "7 Rings" shares with "TUN." In the "7 Rings" video, she appears to be living in a dollhouse with a pink mini couch. At one point, she rips into the walls from behind the scenes, gazing knowingly upon the cute house she once danced in. Could this be a reference to the picture-perfect dollhouse in "Thank U, Next," inspired by the movie 13 Going on 30? Ari's not one for coincidences, so we're going to say it's definitely possible.

Homages to her iconic hair

No Ariana video would be complete without her memorable ponytail getting a major moment. In "7 Rings" it takes center stage, with one scene in particular fans are comparing to Rapunzel.

Watch as Ari's elongated ponytail cascades down an entire flight of stairs. Meanwhile, she jokes in the lyrics about the hairstyle: "You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it."

Nods to her past musical eras

In the Rapunzel-infused section of the video, one fan noticed that her background dancers are wearing an extra special costume: Ari's beloved bunny ears. The fan paired the shot with Ariana's Dangerous Woman promo image, and Ariana herself liked the tweet. Some fans took it even further, speculating, "4 bunnies = 4 eras? She is representing the new era?"

Mentions of Her Exes

"7 Rings" may not explicitly name her exes in the same way "Thank U, Next" did, but some lyrics still hint at Ari's past relationships.

Early on, she references what she's been through the past few months and how she's turned her sadness into a series of bops: "Been through some bad sh*t, I should be a sad b*tch/ Who woulda thought it'd turn me to a savage?" Later, she addresses her broken engagement: "Wearing a ring, but ain't gon' be no 'Mrs.'"

While she waxes poetic about retail therapy, she also touches on her living situation — AKA the apartment she bought with Pete Davidson earlier in 2018 and which she now lives in by herself. "I bought a crib just for the closet/ Both his and hers, I want it, I got it, yeah," she says. In conclusion, no troubles paying rent here.
