Ariana Grande Thought Her Latest Achievement Was "a Joke"

Another day, another record.

Ariana Grande is cementing her reputation as a record-breaker with yet another milestone. Just days after it was announced her latest studio album, Thank U, Next, had surpassed Ed Sheeran’s Divide as the largest streaming debut for a pop album ever, Ari is celebrating yet another music history feat: she’s become the first act since The Beatles in the ‘60s to ever secure the number one, two and three spots in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. But, she just can’t believe it (literal and figuratively.)

Ari stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden on Feb. 19 to talk about her latest achievement and revealed she’d legitimately thought it was a joke when she first heard the news. “I thought it was hilarious. When I woke I thought it was an edit that my fans made,” the singer revealed to Corden. “I thought it was a joke! It’s really wild. My mom and I were driving around listening to The Beatles all day and I was like, ‘This is crazy…this is so weird!"

“I laughed when i saw this bc i thought y’all edited it. thank u from the bottom of my heart. for so many reasons. first time since the beatles huh. that’s wild. i thought this was a joke when i saw it i’m not kidding. i love u. so much. always have n will. thank u for everything,” Ari posted on Twitter the same day after seeing Billboard’s official tweet confirming the news.

And while she might have initially thought fans had photoshopped the rank, the singer is still struggling to take it all in. “Still cant believe this is real fr. thanks for making history with ya girl today. and for making me feel loved. bye crying,” she also tweeted following the announcement, adding “I’m so grateful but it’s just all so funny to me.”

But the news is indeed very real. So much so that even Ari’s nonna had to weigh in on the situation. “Nonna just facetimed me and screamed “ANYTHING ELSE U WANNA DO?” Ari revealed on Twitter, adding “i’m so very proud and grateful for everything but i promise i’ll shut the f*ck up after this. congrats team, i love u. thank u so much.”

Ari kicked off the celebrations with Corden in the studio with a cake and also took the opportunity to share a couple of memes inspired by the feat on her Instagram. However, even after she joked with the host that she intended on taking a break after — “I’ll go away, I promise!” she told Corden on air — it looks like she’s already back in the studio and keeping busy with rehearsals for her upcoming tour.

The devil works hard but Ari definitely works harder and it’s just a matter of time before she breaks yet another record (which we’ll be patiently waiting for.) Fans's efforts to boycott “7 Rings” so that “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” would surpass it as number one might not have worked as they originally intended to, but it's safe to say this is a more than positive outcome after all.
