Ariel Winter has 'regretted' clapping back at online trolls: 'This is stupid'

Ariel Winter is known for her savagery when it comes to dealing with online trolls who come for her on social media.

But she doesn't stand by every smackdown she's delivered, the "Modern Family" actress told Us Weekly in an interview published Sunday.

“I have had those moments where I’ve responded and I have regretted to responding to some of them, not all, but some I have regretted," she said. "I’ve been like, ‘This is stupid. It’s unnecessary.’ I do know … I think as everybody knows, when somebody is posting that comment they want an argument, you know, they want you to respond."

She revealed that she had a breakthrough after reading one fan's comment on social media, which called Winter out for responding to more negative posts than positive ones.

“I actually had a fan comment on one of my posts and said, ‘You respond more to negative comments than you do to positive,’” she said. “I didn’t even realize I was doing that. I think about the positive comments way more and it affects me way more … As a society we do comment more on the negative and that comment really hit me and so now I’m really trying to follow that of like, doing what I actually feel, which is to be thankful for the support and actually show that and kind of try and bury the negative.”

In one negative post from May that prompted a response from Winter, a commenter wrote, "How many surgeries have you had on your body and face now? Two breast reductions, that’s obvious, cheek bone and chin shaving and lip fillers. Pretty obvious, she looks so different "

Winter addressed the accusations in her reply.

"I wasn’t going to reply but I HAVE to ask...what the (expletive) is cheek bone and chin shaving????” Winter replied. “You’re also wrong about all of it by the way :) one breast reduction & I lost weight but you do you boo.”

In another response to a mean commenter in January claiming that fans "liked her better...before she started chopping up her body" with alleged plastic surgery, Winter wrote, "I appreciate you wanting to help girls love themselves the way they are, but you are also kind of cutting someone (me) down."

"I also didn’t get plastic surgery," she added. "That is also not being supportive of women if you’re just assuming something about the way they look."
