She hasn’t been shy in discussing her recent breast reduction surgery, but in her unofficial role as body positive ambassador, Ariel Winter, has spoken out once more to explain her reasons for going under the knife and how the surgery has changed her life both physically and mentally.

Penning a heartfelt essay for Time magazine, the Modern Family actress described the difficulties she faced being an F-cup at just 13-years-old, which not only changed how she felt about her body, but altered the way others viewed her.

“Women are already over-sexualized, and I grew into my body so young. I was 13, 14 years old, and I looked 19,” Ariel wrote.

“Suddenly, people didn’t want to talk about my job — they just wanted to talk about my cleavage. I’d go to awards shows and the next day see everyone on the Internet telling me I shouldn’t look like this and dress like that.”

“The conversation became about my looks instead of my talent and work — everything that I didn’t want. I even started getting messages from older male fans, and let’s just say they were gross.”

But though criticism about her changing body was hard to take, the actress, who plays Alex Dunphy in the award-winning ABC sitcom, says it wasn’t online comments that pushed her into reducing her bust from a 32F to a 34D last June, it was because she felt uncomfortable and unhappy.

“It’s really difficult to be such a small girl and have so much weight on your chest. You physically hurt. You can’t find clothes that fit right. I couldn’t find a cute bathing suit. Everything looked like I was trying to be “sexy.” It didn’t help that I didn’t look like any of my friends my age.”

“I chose surgery because of how I felt, not because of what anyone else thought.”

After her surgery, Ariel said she "automatically felt so much happier and just better physically.” Yes she has scars, but the 18-year-old doesn’t mind putting them on show. At last month’s SAG Awards following online comments about not covering them up she tweeted.

“Guys there is a reason I didn’t make an effort to cover up my scars! They are part of me and I’m not ashamed of them at all.”

No stranger to mean online comments questioning her decision to opt for surgery, the young star chooses to rise above it and has a body confidence message for other women.

“In the end, I think it’s all about how you feel — not what other people think.”
