Arizona Cardinals NFL draft live updates: Marquise Brown trade shakes up 2022 NFL draft

Arizona Cardinals' Marquise Brown trade among big trades on first day of NFL draft

The Arizona Cardinals were just one of several teams to make big trades on the first day of the 2022 NFL draft.

Arizona traded for Baltimore Ravens WR Marquise Brown on Thursday, giving up the No. 23 overall pick., but also getting a third round pick in return.

Another big deal was the Philadelphia Eagles landing star wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Tennessee Titans.

Other teams traded picks in the draft with the Saints moving up to No. 11 and taking Ohio State WR Chris Olave and the Commanders going down to No. 16 and taking Penn State WR Jahan Dotson among the moves.

It was a crazy first day of the NFL draft which leads to the question.

What will the second day hold?

The NFL draft will continue Friday with the second and third rounds, which are set to air on ESPN, ABC and the NFL Network beginning at 4 p.m. Arizona time.

6 wide receivers taken in first round

The Arizona Cardinals added a wide receiver on Thursday after trading their first round pick to the Baltimore Ravens.

Other teams used their first round picks to add to their receiving room.

The first off the board was USC product Drake London, who went to the Falcons with the No. 8 pick. Garrett Wilson out of Ohio State went to the Jets at No. 10, while another Buckeye, Chris Olave, went to the Saints with the next pick.

Detroit made it three straight receivers when they took Alabama's Jameson Williams. Also going in the first round were Penn State's Jahan Dotson, who went to the Commanders and Arkansas' Treylon Burks to the Titans.

Georgia sees 5 defensive players drafted

Trevon Walker out of Georgia was taken first overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the Bulldogs didn't stop there.

The national champions sent three more players to the NFL in the first round.

Defensive tackle Jordan Davis went to the Eagles at No. 13. Linebacker Quay Walker and defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt both went to the Packers with the 22nd and 28th overall picks. The Bulldogs ended their run with the final pick of the round, Lewis Cine, went to the Vikings.

Jets get CB, WR, DE in first round

The New York Jets made several moves in the first round.

They had the No. 4, No. 10 and No. 26 picks.

At No. 4 they took corner Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner out of Cincinnati. Next, they took wide receiver Garrett Wilson out of Ohio State. Later they added defensive end Jermaine Johnson out of Florida State.

Cardinals trade No. 23 for wide receiver

The Arizona Cardinals agreed to a trade with the Baltimore Ravens.

Arizona is acquiring wide receiver Marquise Brown and Baltimore’s third-round pick (No. 100) from the Ravens in exchange for the Cardinals first-round selection (No. 23) in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Brown (5-9, 180) was drafted by Baltimore in the first round (25th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft from Oklahoma and has 195 receptions for 2,361 yards and 21 touchdowns in 46 career games. The 24-year old Brown set career highs with 91 receptions for 1,008 yards last season.

What are the Cardinals to do?

Arizona Republic Cardinals writer Bob McManaman doesn't think the team will be able to nab a wide receiver in the first round after four came off the board in the span of five picks.

The Cardinals hold the No. 23 overall pick.

Cardinals' wide receiver options dwindling

The Arizona Cardinals could use some help at wide receiver.

Will they pick one in the first round of the NFL draft?

A couple of wide receivers are off the board early in the 2022 NFL draft, making it possible that the Cardinals might have to trade up to land a top one Thursday.

Ohio State's Garrett Wilson went to the Jets at No. 10 and Chris Olave went to the Saints, who traded up to get him at No. 11. The Lions traded up from No. 32 to No. 12 to get wide receiver Jameson Williams out of Alabama.

USC's Drake London was the first off the board when he went to the Falcons at No. 8.

Defense dominating

The first five picks of the 2022 NFL Draft were all members of the defense. It's the first time in 30 years that the top five selections were members of the defense.

Numerous wide receivers are also expected to go in the first round.

Georgia defensive end Travon Walker was the first overall pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Walker was not in Las Vegas to meet NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. He chose instead to celebrate with this family near his home in Atlanta.

8 is the magic number

There are eight teams who will not be selecting a player in the first round — barring trades. The teams without first-round picks are the Rams, Bears, Browns, Broncos, Colts, Raiders, Dolphins and 49ers.

There are also eight teams with multiple picks in the first round.

The teams with multiple first-round picks are the Lions (their own and the Rams’), Packers (their own and the Raiders’), Texans (their own and the Browns’), Chiefs (their own and the 49ers’, via the Dolphins), Giants (their own and the Bears’), Jets (their own and the Seahawks’), Saints (the Eagles’ and the Colts’ via the Eagles) and Eagles (the Saints’ and the Dolphins’).

Steve Keim's first-round NFL draft picks with Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals have a mixed history of hits and misses in the first round of the NFL draft under GM Steve Keim since he was hired in 2013.

In 2013, Keim drafted Jonathan Cooper, an offensive lineman out of North Carolina. he later traded Cooper to the New England Patriots to acquire Chandler Jones.

In 2014, the Cardinals landed Washington State safety Deone Bucannon.

Arizona picked offensive lineman D.J. Humphries in 2015, before taking defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche in 2016 and linebacker Haason Reddick in 2017.

In 2018, Keim and the Cardinals picked UCLA QB Josh Rosen, but then picked Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray No. 1 overall in 2019.

The Cardinals have taken Isaiah Simmons, a linebacker from Clemson, and Zaven Collins, a linebacker from Tulsa, in the first round of the past two drafts.

What NFL mock drafts say about Cardinals

NFL mock draft projections for the Arizona Cardinals at No. 23 are a little all over the place.

The Arizona Republic's Bob McManaman has the team going with a wide receiver, but edge rushers and offensive linemen are also popular position picks for the Cardinals in recent draft projections.

Don't rule out the Cardinals potentially making a trade on draft day.

Keep an eye on quarterbacks

Teams that still might be in the hunt for a franchise quarterback of the future include the Panthers at No. 6, the Falcons at No. 8, the Seahawks at No. 9, the Saints at No. 16, the Steelers at No. 20 and the Lions, who hold picks Nos. 2 and 32.

Quarterback Kenny Pickett of Pittsburgh, Liberty’s Malik Willis and Cincinnati's Desmond Ridder could be first-round quarterback selections, and Matt Corral of Ole Miss and Sam Howell of North Carolina could also be in play somewhere in the first round.

The Republic's Bob McManaman shared this about the top pick: "Most insiders expect the Jaguars to draft a defensive player at No.1 and a majority of mock drafts have it being Aidan Hutchinson from Michigan. However, keep your eyes on another edge rusher in Georgia’s Travon Walker, who seems to be shooting up draft boards.

"Early in the process, before the NFL scouting combine, Oregon edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, looked like the consensus No.1 pick. His draft stock hasn’t really slipped, but he no longer is considered to be a safe first overall draft choice due to some comments and choices he made at the combine."
