Arizona residents ordered to evacuate because of wildfire

PHOENIX – Residents of the Roosevelt and Roosevelt Lakes area east of Phoenix are being ordered to immediately evacuate due to the Woodbury Fire, the Gila County Sheriff's Office announced.

Residents should be sure to take any medications, pets and family valuables along with them. Doors and windows including window coverings should be left closed.

The evacuation affects 250 residences, officials said.

A temporary shelter facility has been established for community members and small pets at a school in Miami, according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office.

Any livestock are being sheltered at the Gila County Fairgrounds.

The human-caused Woodbury Fire has already scorched 79 square miles of Superstitions Wilderness since June 8, according to Tonto National Forest officials. Firefighters have established 41% containment.

Roosevelt, a community that is adjacent to Roosevelt Lake, about 32 miles northwest of Globe, and other areas near the lake were the focus of the notice.

State Route 88 north of Apache Junction to Roosevelt Lake is closed. The road is a major thoroughfare to Canyon and Apache lakes, as well as trails, campgrounds and Tortilla Flat, a restaurant and gift shop attraction along the roadside.
