The performer who is slated to sing the national anthem during the Phoenix Suns’ season opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 19 will be a familiar face to Disney and DC Comics fans.

Asher Angel, the 20-year-old actor and singer who grew up doing children’s theater around Phoenix and will reprise his role as Billy Batson in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” next year, will step onto the court at Footprint Center and perform the “Star-Spangled Banner” to kick off the 2022-23 NBA season on Wednesday.

As a longtime Suns fan who has known Devin Booker “for quite some time” and a lifelong Arizonan, Angel said he’s honored to be given this opportunity.

“It was kind of unbelievable that they wanted me to perform on opening day,” he told The Arizona Republic.

How Asher Angel made his way to NBA basketball

Several months ago, someone in the Suns’ entertainment division reached out to gauge Angel’s interest and availability for performing the national anthem. The conversations continued, and on Oct. 17, the NBA team announced in a press release that Angel would be doing the honors.

He’s shown that he has the chops to nail the national anthem before. In 2017, Angel — outfitted in a Larry Fitzgerald jersey — performed the song at a Cardinals game.

It’s important to have a certain level of confidence to pull of such a feat, Angel said, so he’s been practicing with his vocal coach “pretty much on the daily” to ensure he feels ready prepared.

This isn’t the only musical venture that's been in the works for him, though: Fans can rest assured that Angel still has “so much in the works on the musical side.” He’s been working on his next album for several months, with “so many songs in my repertoire” now.

“I’m so ready to release it,” he said. “I don’t have a set-in-stone release date on (the album), but I’m working on that with my team.”

Asher Angel is friendly with Devin Booker’s family

It’ll probably help that there will be friendly faces in the arena; he considers Booker and his younger sister, Mya Powell — whom Angel says he is “really close with” — “amazing people.”

The experience will be “really special” — made even better by the fact that Angel will be able to stick around and see the Suns play the team that ousted them from the playoffs last season.

"Hopefully we bounce back stronger than ever," he said.

Tip-off is at 7 p.m. Oct. 19. Rapper Desiigner will headline the halftime show.
