The Arizona State football team lost to No. 11 Oklahoma State on Saturday in a Week 2 college football game in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Arizona State football can't stay with Oklahoma State in loss

The Arizona State football team was no match for No. 11 Oklahoma State on Saturday night in Stillwater as the Sun Devils fell to the Cowboys in the rain, 34-17.

Oklahoma State wore down the ASU defense on the night after Arizona State held a 3-0 lead after the first quarter.

ASU's Emory Jones went 12-for-23 passing for 223 yards and a touchdown, while Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders was 21-for-38 for 268 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Xazavian Valladay rushed for 118 yards on 21 carries for ASU, scoring a touchdown.

Dominic Richardson had 131 yards on 27 carries and a touchdown for Oklahoma State.

Some costly miscues and penalties hurt the Sun Devils in the loss. They were flagged 10 times for 95 yards.

ASU went 2-for-13 from third down in the game. Oklahoma State outgained ASU in the game, 465-354.

ASU (1-1) will host Eastern Michigan next Saturday at 8 p.m. at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe.

Oklahoma State (2-0) will host Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

Oklahoma State extends lead against ASU in fourth quarter

The Oklahoma State Cowboys extended their lead against Arizona State to 34-17 with a 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive that took 5:19.

Spencer Sanders completed a 14-yard pass to Ollie Gordon for the touchdown, which puts Oklahoma State completely in control against ASU.

Score: Oklahoma State 34, ASU 17 (7:41 left in fourth quarter)

Sun Devils go three-and-out vs. Cowboys

ASU's next possession was a dud for the Sun Devils as Emory Jones threw three straight incomplete passes as Arizona State went three-and-out on its next possession.

With plenty of time left in the game, it was interesting that the Sun Devils didn't attempt a run on the drive, which took just 31 seconds.

Oklahoma State strikes fast to extend lead vs. Arizona State

Well, we don't have a 3-point game anymore.

It took Oklahoma State just three plays to answer ASU's touchdown with a touchdown of its own.

The Cowboys went 65 yards on three plays over just :54 seconds to take a 27-17 lead.

Spencer Sanders completed a 21-yard screen pass to Dominic Richardson and a 31-yard trick-play touchdown pass to Bryson Green for most of the yards on the drive.

The Sun Devils obviously can't afford to trade touchdowns with the Cowboys to have a chance to get back in this game.

ASU football responds early in fourth quarter vs. Oklahoma State

The Sun Devils are down just three points against Oklahoma State after scoring early in the fourth quarter.

It only took them two plays to do it.

Xazavian Valladay had a 38-yard run to open the fourth quarter, then Elijhah Badger caught a 21-yard pass from Emory Jones to pull ASU within 20-17 with 14:25 left in the game.

ASU's scoring drive took eight plays and went for 85 yards and took 3:01 off the clock.

ASU converts 2 third-downs at end of third quarter vs. Oklahoma State

On third-and-six at the ASU 19, Emory Jones completed a 10-yard pass to Giovanni Sanders for ASU's first third-down conversion of the game.

Then, on third-and-18 from the ASU 21, Jones connected with Elijhah Badger for a first down at the end of the third quarter, with Badger spinning and fighting for the first-down yardage.

The Sun Devils are down to the Cowboys at the end of three quarters, 20-10.

Emory Jones is 10-for-18 passing for 191 yards in the game now.

ASU has the ball at its own 41-yard line to start the fourth quarter.

ASU can't convert another third down vs. Oklahoma State

Just like that, all of ASU's early momentum in the second half is gone. The Sun Devils ran the ball three times on their possession after the Oklahoma State field goal and failed to pick up a first down.

ASU is 0-for-9 on third down in the game. It had a third-and-2 that it couldn't pick up on that drive, going three-and-out and punting the ball back to Oklahoma State.

The Sun Devils are just 4-for-22 on third down this season.

The saving grace for the Sun Devils?

Their defense then forced Oklahoma State to a three-and-out. There is 2:26 left in the third quarter.

Oklahoma State extends lead with field goal vs. Arizona State

Oklahoma State had a first-and-goal from the ASU 10 set up after a 42-yard pass from Spencer Sanders to Braydon Johnson, but the Arizona State defense held the Cowboys to a Tanner Brown field goal.

Oklahoma State now has a 20-10 lead with 5:45 left in the third quarter. It's also raining in Stillwater.

ASU can't take advantage of chance vs. Oklahoma State

The Sun Devils saw their ensuing drive stall when Emory Jones was hit and threw an incomplete pass on third-and-six at the Oklahoma State 30.

Herm Edwards elected to try a 48-yard field goal on fourth-and-six by Carter Brown that went wide, giving Oklahoma State the ball back and being a missed opportunity for Arizona State.

ASU's defense does its part on first possession of second half

ASU's defense forced Oklahoma State to punt after a 4-play, 15-yard drive after ASU scored on its first possession, giving the ball back to the Sun Devils.

So, the Sun Devils scored a touchdown on their first possession of the half and then stopped the Cowboys.

Can they keep the momentum going?

ASU football opens second half with touchdown drive

The Sun Devils got the start they needed in the second half of the game against Oklahoma State.

Buoyed by a 73-yard completion from Emory Jones to Giovanni Sanders, ASU drew within 17-10 with 12:18 left in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run by Xazavian Valladay.

ASU scored a field goal on its opening drive of the game and now scored a touchdown on the opening possession of the second half.

ASU's drive was four plays, 75 yards and took 2:42 off the clock.

Score: Oklahoma State 17, ASU 10 (12:18 left in third quarter)

First-half observations for ASU vs. Oklahoma State game

We're at the half in Stillwater and Oklahoma State holds a 17-3 lead over Arizona State after scoring 17 unanswered points in the second quarter.

ASU's defense played great in the first quarter as the Sun Devils built a 3-0 lead, but the offense's inability to move the ball in the second quarter left the defense winded and Oklahoma State was able to exploit the Sun Devils in that quarter on its way to a 14-point lead at the half.

The Sun Devils' Emory Jones is 7-for-12 passing, but ASU only has 88 yards through the air.

It has 70 yards rushing on 20 attempts.

ASU is 0-for-7 on third downs in the game.

Penalties have hurt the Sun Devils with ASU flagged four times for 50 yards.

Kyle Soelle had 10 tackles, an interception and a quarterback hurry in the half for the SUn Devils.

Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders is just 11-for-27 passing for 104 yards, but the Cowboys have rushed the ball for 123 yards on 24 attempts.

ASU gets the ball to start the second half and needs to produce a score of some kind on it to get it back in the game.

Long, sustained drives would help the ASU defense rest and keep the Oklahoma State defense off the field, but the Sun Devils need a score of any kind and then a stop of any kind to get this game turned around.

ASU football in trouble vs. Oklahoma State

Things have gone sideways fast for the Sun Devils against the Cowboys.

After holding a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, Oklahoma State has scored 17 points in the second quarter.

It could have been worse for the Sun Devils, but Oklahoma State appeared to take its foot off the gas and play conservatively on its final possession of the first half, which ended with a 43-yard field goal by Tanner Brown to give the Cowboys a 17-3 lead.

Oklahoma State has two touchdowns and a field goal on its last three possessions.

Score: Oklahoma State 17, ASU 3 (:26 left in second quarter)

Penalty proves costly for Sun Devils vs. Cowboys

ASU's defense appears winded against Oklahoma State and a penalty on Joe Moore for a late hit on QB Spencer Sanders didn't help.

The Cowboys would have had a third-and-10 on their drive, but Moore's penalty gave them a first down and helped the Cowboys score on a 96-yard touchdown drive to take a 14-3 lead with 2:45 left in the first half.

Sanders ran it in from six yards out for the score.

The Sun Devils really need to get something going on offense on this ensuing possession before the half if they want to get back some confidence and momentum against the Cowboys.

ASU had 78 yards on its first drive. It had 85 on their next five in the game.

ASU fumble proves costly vs. Oklahoma State

Xazavian Valladay's fumble did in fact prove costly for the Sun Devils in the second quarter of their game against Oklahoma State.

After the ASU running back lost the ball at the 37-yard line, Oklahoma State went 37 yards on five plays over 1:13 to take a 7-3 lead on a 3-yard run from Dominic Richardson.

All five plays on the drive were running plays.

ASU's defense has played admirably in this game, but the offense can't put it in situations like it did if the Sun Devils want to have any chance of winning.

It just feels like Oklahoma State took all the momentum away from ASU. Can ASU get something going on offense and get it back?

ASU makes first big miscue

The Sun Devils' Xazavian Valladay fumbled the ball on a 3-and-1 run at the ASU 39-yard line with 9:41 left in the first half, giving Oklahoma State the ball in great field position.

Will it hurt ASU and propel Oklahoma State?

ASU's defense had played well, but it seems as if Oklahoma State has been just inches away at times from breaking off some big plays.

First quarter observations for ASU vs. Oklahoma State game

The first quarter of the ASU vs. Oklahoma State game is over and the Sun Devils have a 3-0 lead over the Cowboys in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Oklahoma State's offense appeared to be heating up before ASU's Kyle Soelle intercepted Spencer Sanders at ASU's 22-yard line, keeping Oklahoma State off the scoreboard in the first.

Oklahoma State got 110 yards in the first quarter, while ASU got 107.

The Sanders' interception was the only turnover of the opening quarter and it was a big one, helping preserve ASU's lead. The Cowboys punted on their first three possession of the game and threw an interception on their fourth.

ASU is averaging seven yards per rush and has 56 yards on eight attempts. The Sun Devils need to keep their running game going to help run the clock and keep Oklahoma State's offense off the field.

ASU's Emory Jones was 4-for-8 passing the the first. Arizona State will need him to step up to help keep its chances of an upset alive.

Overall, it was a very positive first quarter for ASU. The team is up 3-0 on the road against a ranked opponent. You can't complain about that.

Defenses standing tall in first quarter of Arizona State vs. Oklahoma State game

ASU's defense allowed Oklahoma State to get its second first down of the game on a penalty for roughing the passer, but the Sun Devils then forced the Cowboys to punt for the third time in their first three possessions.

The Sun Devils went three-and-out on their ensuing possession.

Arizona State's defense off to strong start vs. Oklahoma State

It's only been two possessions, but ASU's defense has held Oklahoma State to 19 yards and just one first down on those two possessions.

The Cowboys have 15 yards rushing and just four yards passing after their two possessions.

Oklahoma State's offense plays extremely fast, can the Sun Devils continue to keep the Cowboys off the field? That would obviously go a long way in helping their case for an upset.

ASU wasn't able to add to its score against Oklahoma State on its ensuing possession and got away from running the ball on the possession.

Emory Jones completed a 28-yard pass to Elijhah Badger on the first play of the drive, but then had three straight incompletions to force ASU to punt.

ASU strikes first against Oklahoma State

The Sun Devils came up with a stop on the opening possession of the game, forcing Oklahoma State to punt after just one first down.

The Cowboys went just 13 yards on six plays on their first possession.

ASU's opening possession got off to a great start as Xazavian Valladay ran for 42 yards on the Sun Devils' first play from scrimmage.

The Sun Devils the drove 78 yards on eight plays over 3:41 to take the a 3-0 lead on a 27-yard Carter Brown field goal.

Brown had four field goals last week and was the Pac 12 special teams player of the week.

ASU impressed on the drive, but had to settle for a field goal. Still, the Sun Devils got a stop on Oklahoma State's first possession, and find a way to score on their first possession, providing some early positives for Herm Edwards' team.

ASU football injury update for game vs. Oklahoma State

The Sun Devils could be pretty shorthanded against the Cowboys on Saturday.

CB Ed Woods and DL Gharin Stansbury (hamstring) are not expected to play, in addition to DE Mike Matus and OL Joey Ramos, who have both been lost for the season.

Game-time decisions are NB Jordan Clark, OL Des Holmes and DT Nesta Jade Silvera.

ASU's captains are Case hatch, LaDarius Henderson, Kyle Soelle and Merlin Robertson. Spencer Sanders, Braydon Johnson, Matt Hembrough and Mason Cobb are the captains for Oklahoma State.

ASU won the toss and deferred to the second half, giving Oklahoma State the ball to start the game.

Oklahoma State theme against Arizona State

Oklahoma State is attempting a stripe out for Saturday's game against ASU.

The school is encouraging fans to "Stripe BPS" by dressing in different colors at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Some sections are encouraged to wear orange for the game, while others are asked to wear white. A third group is requested to wear black in their locations.
