ASU comes up just short in loss to Stanford
The Arizona State football team didn't allow Stanford to score a touchdown in Saturday's Pac-12 college football game in Palo Alto, Calif., while the Sun Devils scored two touchdowns of their own.
ASU still lost the game.
Joshua Karty hit five field goals in the game for Stanford, who outscored ASU 9-0 in the second half after ASU had a 14-6 lead at halftime.
ASU had one last chance at a touchdown, but Elijhah Badger wasn't able to stay in bounds on a 42-yard catch on fourth and 19 at the Stanford 1-yard line with three seconds left in the game.

The Sun Devils struggled to move the ball in the second half, having to punt on their first four possessions after the break. On the fifth, they turned the ball over on downs after Badger came up with a catch from Emory Jones just out of bounds at the three-yard line.
Stanford outgained ASU in the game, 398-355, with a 320-227 advantage in passing yards.

ASU held a 128-78 advantage in rushing.
Jones finished 14-for-25 for ASU passing the football, with one interception and a touchdown.
Badger had 118 yards on six catches, with a touchdown.

Xazavian Valladay had 18 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown for Arizona State.
Tanner McKee went 33-for-57 for Stanford passing, throwing for 320 yards.
Arizona State's defense came up with timely stop after timely stop in the game to hold Stanford to the five field goals, but its offense couldn't muster any points against the Cardinal in the second half.
Karty connected on field goals of 44, 36, 454, 36 and 47 yards to provide Stanford enough points for the victory.
ASU fell to 2-5 with the loss. Stanford improved to 3-4.
ASU plays at Colorado next week. Stanford is at UCLA.

ASU defense gives offense another chance
The Sun Devils forced Stanford to punt after a 5-play, 12-yard drive, giving ASU the ball with 1:28 left in the game and no timeouts.
ASU will start its drive at its own 33-yard line with one last chance in the game. Can it get into field goal range?
ASU football punts again vs. Stanford
The Sun Devils needed to get something going on their next possession on offense against Stanford.
But just like their previous possession in the second half, they couldn't sustain a lenghty drive.
ASU's drive went just 26 yards over five plays in 2:29, giving Stanford the ball back with 3:54 left in the game.
Arizona State's defense has played admirably in this game, holding Stanford to five field goals, but the offense's inability to move the ball in the second half has really hurt ASU's chances to get a victory.
ASU could really use another stop from its defense as time ticks down in the game.
Stanford regains lead against Arizona State in fourth quarter
It's the Joshua Karty show for Stanford in its game against Arizona State.
The placekicker just made his fifth field goal, without a miss, to give the Cardinals a 15-14 lead with 6:28 left in the game in Palo Alto.
Stanford had not led the game against ASU since taking a 3-0 lead on Karty's fist field goal on its first possession of the game.
Karty's latest field goal was his longest of the game, 47 yards.
It capped a 16-play, 70 yard drive that took 5:05 off the clock.
Stanford started the drive at their own 1-yard line.
Stanford has outscored ASU in the second half, 9-0 to overcome a 14-6 halftime deficit.
The Sun Devils have not been able to get anything going on offense in the second half as Stanford's defense has been able to stop ASU.
ASU has just 83 yards on offense in the second half.

ASU drive stalls again vs. Stanford
The ASU offense hasn't been able to get anything going in the second half against Stanford, putting more pressure on the team's defense.
Will the Sun Devil defense be able to step up?
ASU had to punt again after a five-play, 36-yard drive, but was able to down the ball at the Stanford 1-yard line.
Stanford has outscored ASU 6-0 in the second half of the game.
Another field goal draws Stanford closer vs. ASU
Stanford hasn't been able to get into the end zone so far in this game.
It might not need too.
The Cardinal pulled within 14-12 on a 36-yard field goal by Joshua Karty, his fourth field goal of the game.
Stanford had a 1st & 10 at the ASU 22 on its drive, but the Sun Devil defense, as it has done all game, made the plays it needed to hold the Cardinal to a field goal.
Stanford's drive went for nine plays and 67 yards over 2:27.
ASU really needs to get something going on offense, where it has stagnated in the second half.

Stanford forces ASU to punt again
The Sun Devils can't get anything going on offense in the second half.
ASU had to punt after a 6-play, 24 yard drive as Emory Jones had an incomplete pass on third and 10 at the ASU 49 to force the punt.
The Arizona State defense is going to need to come up big again to preserve the lead for the Sun Devils.
Sun Devils force Cardinal to another field goal
ASU's defense bent, but didn't break, and forced Stanford to another field goal after having a 1st & 10 at the ASU 24 yard line.
Joshua Karty hit a 44-yard field goal, his third field goal of the day, to pull Stanford within 14-9.
Stanford's drive went for eight plays and 21 yards.

ASU forced to punt on first possession of second half vs. Stanford
Stanford forced ASU to punt after the Sun Devils gained just 13 yards over six plays, and a holding penalty on the kick gave Stanford really good field position for their next drive.
ASU ran for 17 yards on its first four plays of the possession, but Emory Jones had a pass completion go for negative four yards and then had an incomplete pass to stall the drive.
Stanford has the ball at the ASU 47-yard line to begin its drive.
ASU sack ends Stanford's opening drive of second half
Arizona State's Anthonie Cooper sacked Stanford's Tanner McKee on 3rd & 8 at the ASU 40 for a four-yard loss to force Stanford to punt on its first possession of the second half.
ASU's defense continues to come up with timely stops against the Cardinal offense.
Stanford had five plays on the drive for 21 yards and took 2:41 off the clock.
ASU takes 14-6 lead into half vs. Stanford
Time ran out on Stanford on their final possession of the first half after eight plays and 32 yards, taking us to halftime with ASU holding a 14-6 lead in Palo Alto.
Stanford will receive the second-half kickoff.
The Cardinal have outgained the Sun Devils in the game, 223-211, and hold a 189-117 lead in passing yards.
ASU holds a 94-34 lead in rushing yards.
Both teams have one turnover in the game, interceptions from both starting quarterbacks.
Tanner McKee is 19-for-31 passing for Stanford. Emory Jones is 8-for-12 for ASU.
ASU's Elijhah Badger had five catches for 98 yards and a touchdown in the first half for five of ASU's eight receptions in the game.

ASU drive comes up short late in first half
The Sun Devils came up empty on their ensuing possession when Carter Brown missed a 41-yard field goal.
The field goal came up a couple of yards short, which is uncharacteristic for Brown, who has shined this season.
ASU's drive went for nine plays and 54 yards and took 3:47.
The Sun Devils could use a stop here as the Cardinal get the ball to start the third quarter after deferring to start the game.
Arizona State forces Stanford turnover
Emory Jones' interception didn't end up costly the Sun Devils, because Jordan Clark dove for an interception on the fourth play of Stanford's ensuing possession.
Clark was able to read Tanner McKee perfectly to time the diving interception, which gave ASU the ball at its own 22 yard line.

ASU QB Emory Jones had a interception called back on the next possession because of a Stanford defensive holding penalty, but then threw an interception two plays later to give Stanford the ball at the ASU 47.
Jones is now 6-for-10 passing for 97 yards and the interception, along with one passing touchdown.
Sun Devils force Cardinal to punt for first time
Stanford had to punt for the first time in the game after going 21 yards on four plays over 1:47.
Tanner McKee connected with John Humphreys for a 16-yard completion, but Stanford's drive stalled after that.
ASU can't capitalize after Stanford's turnover on downs
The Sun Devils couldn't get anything going after forcing a Stanford turnover on downs, and had to punt after only gaining six yards on its next possession.
There is 8:54 left in the first half.

Stanford turned the ball over on downs on its next possession, failing to convert a 4th & 5 pass when it was dropped at ASU's 35-yard line.
Stanford's drive went for 9-plays and 46 yards.
You have to give the Sun Devils' defense some credit. It has allowed some yards, but it is holding strong when it needs to on Stanford's offensive possessions.
ASU extends lead with long touchdown pass vs. Stanford
Stanford has no answer for Emory Jones passing to Elijhah Badger.
ASU extended its lead to 14-6 with a 39-yard pass from the QB to the wide receiver to cap a 7-play, 75-yard drive that took 2:54.
Jones is now 5-for-6 in the game for 95 yards and a touchdown.
Four of his passes have gone to Badger, who has 87 receiving yards.
The Sun Devils are averaging 15.8 yards per pass in the game.
A lot of people questioned whether ASU should have gone with Jones in this game after the way Trenton Bourguet shined in relief of him in the upset win over Washington, but Jones has looked great so far for the Sun Devils in this game.

ASU holds Stanford to another field goal
The ASU defense buckled down when it needed to and held Stanford to a 36-yard field goal by Joshua Karty after the Cardinal had a 1st & 10 at the ASU 18 on their drive.
Stanford's drive went 11 plays for 57 yards and took 4:52.

Arizona State jumps out to first lead vs. Stanford
The Sun Devils responded to Stanford's field goal with a 6-play, 75 yard touchdown drive over 3:13 to take a 7-3 lead.
Xazavian Valladay ran the ball in from 15 yards out for the touchdown for ASU, but most of the damage on the drive was done with Emory Jones passing to Elijhah Badger.
Jones connected with Badger for 14 yards on 3rd & 13 at the ASU 22 in a key play early in the drive.
Badger also drew a defensive pass interference penalty on the drive and caught a 30-yard pass.
It was an impressive drive for ASU, especially after its first drive of the game stalled.

Stanford scores first in game vs. ASU
The Cardinal did not go three-and-out on their first possession of the game.
Joshua Karty connected on a 44-yard field goal to cap a 9-play, 44-yard drive as Stanford took a 3-0 lead on ASU.
The drive took 3:42 off the clock.
Tanner McKee connected on three straight passes to different wide receivers on the drive to put Stanford in field goal position.

ASU goes three-and-out on first possession
The Sun Devils received the ball to start the game, but couldn't get anything going on their first possession.
Xazavian Valladay ran for a combined nine yards on the first two plays, but quarterback Emory Jones threw an incomplete pass on third down and 1 at the ASU 34, forcing the Sun Devils to punt to start the game.

Most sites are predicting a very close game between the Pac-12 rivals, with the writers appearing to be split on the outcome of the game.
Some are going with Stanford to cover the point spread, while others are taking Arizona State with the points, or even picking the Sun Devils to win outright against the Cardinal.

ASU, Stanford records this college football season
The Sun Devils are 2-4 on the season, but are coming off a big 45-38 win over Washington on Oct. 8.
They were on a bye last week. Arizona State's other win was a 40-3 win over NAU in its season opener. It had dropped four straight games to Oklahoma State, Eastern Michigan, Utah and USC before beating Washington.
Stanford is also 2-4 and the Cardinal are also coming off a big win, a 16-14 win over Notre Dame last Saturday on the road.
Stanford's other win this season came over Colgate, 41-10, in its season opener. Before beating Notre Dame, it had dropped four straight to USC, Washington, Oregon and Oregon State.
