Arizonans in the MLB draft: Former Queen Creek star Jacob Berry taken 6th overall by Miami Marlins

Jacob Berry, a former Queen Creek High star, was taken sixth overall Sunday in the draft by the Miami Marlins.

Berry, who can play infield and outfield, played at Arizona and LSU, putting up power numbers. He was considered a top-10 pick by MLB.com in the draft.

Last year, he was the National Freshman of the Year at UA, then followed head coach Jay Johnson to LSU, where he hit .370 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs last season.

In the 2021 season, he hit .352 with 17 homers and 70 RBIs. Because the 2020 season was shortened by COVID, he only played a handful of games his senior season at Queen Creek.

Berry, 6-foot, 212 pounds, who hit a total of nine home runs in his high school career, became a draft-eligible sophomore at LSU.

Arizona C Susac goes in 1st round to the A's

Arizona sophomore catcher Daniel Susac was the 19th overall pick, going in the first round to the Oakland Athletics.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound power hitter was a unanimous All-American, hitting .366 with 19 doubles, 12 home runs and 61 RBIs, starting all 64 games last season.

ASU OF Lampe goes to Cleveland in 3rd round

The Cleveland Guardians chose Arizona State sophomore outfielder Joe Lampe in the third round, the 92nd overall pick.

Lampe is known for his speed. He is a left-handed hitter capable of covering much ground in center field. He made the All-Pac-12 Defensive team as a freshman in 2021. He hit .340 with 12 home runs, 41 RBIs and 17 stolen bases last season.

ASU SS McLain taken in 5th round by Dodgers

Sean McLain, a sophomore shortstop at ASU, was chosen by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fifth round Monday. He was the 165th overall pick.

He hit .333 with 13 doubles and 34 RBIs last season. He is a defensive standout who is clutch in two-out situations at the plate. As a freshman in 2021, he had the third-longest hitting streak in program history with 23 games.

Central Arizona RHP Woessner goes in 6th round

Central Arizona College 6-foot-4, 230-pound right-hander Tyler Woessner went in the sixth round to the Milwaukee Brewers as the 192nd overall pick.

Woessner, a 2018 graduate of Phoenix Pinnacle High, went 11-2 last season. His fastball has been clocked at 95 mph.

Nogales' Crisantes taken by Diamondbacks in 7th round

Nogales shortstop Demetrio Crisantes became the first Arizona high school player chosen in the draft, going to the Diamondbacks in the seventh round as the 198th pick.

Nogales coach Oscar Favela said that Crisantes was invited to the MLB combine in San Diego last month but did not go.

He was the coaches' pick for 5A Player of the Year last season, after hitting .485 with a .929 slugging percentage and .618 OBP. He had 48 hits, 15 doubles, four triples, seven homers and 26 RBIs. He walked 33 times and struck out three times.

GCU pitcher Nick Hull taken by Cubs in 7th round

Grand Canyon fifth-year pitcher Nick Hull's decision to return to college for one more year, given the extra COVID season, paid off.

The right-hander was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the seventh round. He was the 203rd overall pick. He wasn't rated by MLB Pipeline ahead of the draft.  Hull was 7-1 with a 3.72 ERA last season, helping the Antelopes reach the NCAA Tournament a second straight year.

Former Horizon star Kody Huff goes to Rockies in 7th round

Former Horizon catcher/infielder Kody Huff, who was a standout at Stanford, helping the Cardinal to the College World Series, went to the Colorado Rockies in the seventh round, the 206th overall pick.

South Mountain CC catcher Sosa goes in 10th round

South Mountain Community College redshirt freshman catcher Gustavo Sosa was chosen by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round, the 302nd overall pick.

2nd CAC pitcher goes in the draft

Central Arizona College left-hander Drew Sommers was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 11th round on Tuesday. He was the 344th overall pick of the draft.

Sommers, who is from Carlsbad, California, was 2-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 44 innings last season. He is the second CAC pitcher taken in the draft. Right-hander Tyler Woessner went to the Brewers in the sixth round.

Former Sahuarita RHP Mejia goes in 11th round to the Braves

New Mexico State right-handed pitcher Ian Mejia was taken in the 11th round by the Atlanta Braves.

He was a top Arizona high school player at Sahuarita, before going to the University of Arizona.

He was drafted by the Mets in the 35th round out of high school in 2018.

He pitched at Pima Community College and for the Aggies at NMSU.

ASU catcher taken in 12th round

Arizona State catcher Nate Baez, an Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge graduate, was taken by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round Tuesday, the 354th overall pick.

He hit .319 with 10 homers and 48 RBIs last season.

Former Hamilton pitcher goes to White Sox in 14th round

Former Chandler Hamilton left-hander Shane Murphy was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 14th round, the 431st pick.

Murphy pitched at Chandler Gilbert Community College.

2 ASU pitchers go in 15th round

ASU right-hander Kyle Luckham was chosen by the Washington Nationals in the 15th round. The senior was the 441st overall selection.

Ten picks later in the 15th round, ASU left-hander Adam Tulloch was taken by the Cleveland Guardians.

GCU OF Tayler Aguilar taken by Yankees in 15th round

Outfielder Tayler Aguilar became the second Grand Canyon player taken in the draft, going to the New York Yankees in the 15th round, the 460th overall pick.

Aguilar, 6-foot, 205 pounds, hit a Division I school-record 23 home runs and drove in 73 runs last season for the Antelopes, hitting ,326.

Arizona standout O'Tremba last pick of 15th round

Arizona junior outfielder Tanner O'Tremba, who had a breakout season, making All-Pac-12, was the final pick of the 15th round, going to the San Francisco Giants.

He hit .351 with 52 runs scored, 21 doubles, 11 home runs and four triples, driving in 56 runs. He had a .446 on-base percentage.

GCU closer Reilly goes to A's in 18th round

Grand Canyon junior closer Vince Reilly went to the Oakland A's in the 18th round, the 544th pick. That gives GCU three players taken in the 20-round draft.

Walden Grove's Rushford taken in the 18th round

Sahuarita Walden Grove outfielder Milo Rushford became the second Arizona high school player taken in the draft, going to the Kansas City Royals in the 18th round, the 535 overall pick.

Rushford, who throws and bats left-handed, was a two-way player in high school. He hit .613 with nine home runs, 57 hits and 40 RBIs. He also stole 13 bases and was 5-1 on the mound with a 2.43 ERA.

Cienega outfielder Jackson taken in 18th round

Vail Cienega outfielder Isaiah Jackson became the third Arizona high school player taken in the draft, going to the Houston Astros in the 18th round. He is the 553rd overall pick. MLB Pipeline ranked him at 229.

Hamilton OF Gavin Turley drops to Diamondbacks in 19th round

Hamilton outfielder Gavin Turley, rated the 107th-best draft pick by MLB.com, fell all the way to the 19th round, picked up by the local team, the Diamondbacks taking him as the 558th overall selection.

Hamilton coach Mike Woods believes there may have been a signability issue for why Turley fell so far. Turley told The Republic before the draft that the first two rounds would given him an indication whether he goes pro or to Oregon State.

Teams may have stayed away from him after the second round, figuring it would be hard to come up with enough money to keep him from playing for his "dream school" Oregon State. The powerful right-handed hitter smashed 15 home runs his senior season, leading Hamilton to the 6A state title.

GCU reliever Ankeney taken in 20th round by Mets

Grand Canyon left-handed reliever Eli Ankeney, a Phoenix Desert Vista product, went to the New York Mets in the 20th round. He is the fourth GCU player taken in the draft.

ASU's Long last player taken in the draft

ASU first baseman Ethan Long was the last player taken in the 20-round draft, going to the San Francisco Giants in the 20th round as the 616th overall selection.
