Arizona's new congressional delegation flips majority Republican

Arizona's next congressional delegation will be made up six Republicans and three Democrats as two of the state's nine seats in the House of Representatives flipped to the GOP in the Nov. 8 election.

The nine will join two Democrats, Kirsten Sinema and Mark Kelly, who represent the state in the Senate.

On Monday, Republicans Juan Ciscomani in the 6th Congressional District in southern Arizona and incumbent Rep. David Schweikert in the 1st Congressional District in the Phoenix area became the final two winners in an election count that has continued for almost a week.

Ciscomani's district, which is currently held by retiring Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick, includes edges of Tucson and parts of Pima County, as well as sections of Cochise, Graham, Greenlee and Pinal counties.

Ciscomani was a longtime aide to Republican Gov. Doug Ducey. He defeated Democrat Kirsten Engel, a former state senator.

The 1st District includes Scottsdale, Cave Creek, Paradise Valley and parts of north Phoenix. Schweikert defeated Democrat Jevin Hodge. Schweikert, 60, is a former state legislator and Maricopa County treasurer. He entered Congress in 2011 and sits on the powerful tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee.

Hodge, 28, is the head of the oldest Head Start Program in Arizona. He defeated Phoenix basketball executive Adam Metzendorf in the Aug. 2 primary. Hodge in 2020 lost a race for the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

On Friday, incumbent Rep. Greg Stanton, D-Ariz., was named the the winner over Republican rival Kelly Cooper. Stanton's 4th District contains parts of Tempe, Mesa, Phoenix and Chandler. 

Republican Eli Crane defeated incumbent Rep. Tom O'Halleran, D-Ariz., in the 2nd Congressional District. Crane was declared the winner Thursday night.

Crane's 2nd District includes a wide swath of northern and eastern Arizona, encompassing parts of 11 counties.

Three Republicans and two Democrats were declared winners earlier.

Reps. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., and Debbie Lesko, R-Ariz., of Arizona's 8th and 9th congressional districts, sailed to reelection Tuesday in contests in which they were unopposed on the ballot.

Reps. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., and Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., of the 3rd and 7th districts also won decisively Tuesday against Republicans Jeff Zink and Luis Pozzolo.

Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., also won against Democrat Javier Ramos in a three-way race that also included independent candidate Clint Smith.
