Arizona's university presidents just received pay raises. Here are the details

The Arizona Board of Regents voted Thursday to give the leaders of its state universities roughly a 3% raise and one-time bonuses.

The raises will tack between $17,000 and $24,000 onto each of the three university presidents' base salaries.

Arizona State University President Michael Crow will also rake in $150,000 in bonuses, the largest amount of the university presidents. Northern Arizona University President José Luis Cruz Rivera will see $135,000 in bonuses and University of Arizona President Robert Robbins will get $132,500 in bonuses.

The bonuses, called "at-risk compensation" by the regents, stem from various goals that the university presidents must complete at the regents' request. Some are accomplished in one year and others over the course of several years.

The regents annually conduct performance reviews with the three presidents of Arizona's public universities to determine if they've hit their goals and if bonuses or raises are appropriate.

If an annual goal is partially complete, the regents can also opt to give partial bonus payments, with the amount paid left to the regents' discretion. They did so on Thursday when they gave Robbins an amount of $42,500 out of a possible bonus of $45,000 for a partially completed goal. He failed to fully secure at least $200 million in initial funding for the Center for Advanced Molecular Immunotherapies by June 30.

All of the university presidents also saw their contracts extended by a year. Crow's contract is now termed through June 2028. Robbin's and Cruz Rivera's contracts are termed until June 2026.

How much does ASU President Michael Crow earn?

After Thursday's vote by the regents, Crow's base salary is approximately $834,000.

He also receives a roughly $175,000 contribution to his retirement fund annually, a $70,000 annual housing stipend and a $10,000 annual automobile allowance.

He stands to receive a $180,000 bonus next year if he reaches the goals laid out for him by the regents. That number might take a $30,000 hit, however, if he fails to fulfill an additional assignment regarding the implementation of a single general education pathway for all first-time incoming students at ASU.

How much does UA President Robert Robbins earn?

Robbin's new base salary is approximately $816,000.

He also sees about $171,000 put into his retirement fund annually and receives a $10,000 annual automobile allowance. In lieu of a housing allowance, he is given use of the University of Arizona's presidential residence as his primary home.

He stands to see a $150,000 bonus next year if he hits the goals laid out for him by the regents. That amount may drop by $20,000 if Robbins fails to complete the centralization of the university's information technology services.

How much does NAU President José Luis Cruz Rivera earn?

Cruz Rivera's salary stands at about $594,000 following the regents' vote on Thursday.

He also receives about $107,000 annually in his retirement fund, a $70,000 annual housing stipend and a $10,000 annual automobile allowance.

He stands to see a $150,000 bonus next year if he hits the goals laid out for him by the regents.
