Arkansas records 75 work-related deaths in 2022

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — There were 75 work-related deaths recorded in Arkansas in 2022, according to data from the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries.

The data says the number of deaths in 2022 rose from 74 in 2021.

The report says there were 57 deaths in 2022 involving wage and salary workers in the private sector, which is up from 49 in 2021. It says self-employed worker deaths accounted for seven, from 11 in 2021. There were 10 fatal injuries among local and state government workers, down from 13 in 2021.

The data says there were 72 men and three women who died in a work-related incident in 2022.

The data says 26, or 34.7% of work-related deaths in 2022 came from transportation incidents. Work-related transportation deaths decreased from 44 in 2021 but still led to all deaths for the 29th year in a row. This includes 12 work-related deaths from roadway collisions with another vehicle, which is down from 13 in 2021. There were also three workers killed in pedestrian vehicular incidents, which is down from six in 2021. There were three deaths related to aircraft incidents which is down from five in 2021. All were from in-flight crashes.


According to the data, 15 workers were killed due to contact with objects or equipment in 2022, up from 10 in 2021. This includes nine workers who died when hit by the object.

Falls, slips and trips resulted in 13 work-related deaths in 2022, up from 10 in 2021.

The data says there were nine worker deaths due to exposure to harmful substances or environments in 2022, up from four in 2021.

There were 12 other work-related deaths in 2022. Nine of those workers died from open wounds, up from five in 2021. Eight of these were gunshot wounds.

The report says a total of 5,486 workers died from a work-related injury in the United States in 2022, a 5.7% increase from the total of five, 190 deaths in 2021.

According to the data, on average, a worker died every 96 minutes in 2022, which averages out to 15 work-related deaths every day and 105 every week.
