Arkansas takes down nation’s No. 1 team in series opener

A pitcher’s duel turned into a rout. An extra-innings rout.

No. 3 Arkansas scored eight runs in the 10th inning Friday to knock of the nation’s No. 1 team, LSU, 9-3, in the teams’ series opener.

The Tigers tied the game at one on a solo home run in the eighth to ultimately force the extra frame. Arkansas, which had just one run on three hits to that point, came alive.

Freshman Reese Robinette hit a three-run home run, Brady Slavens hit a sacrifice fly and Kendall Diggs finished things with a grand slam to break things open.

Hagen Smith, who worked the final 4 2/3 innings, gave up two runs in the bottom of the 10th, but it was far too little for the Tigers. Smith and starter Hunter Hollan combined to give up the three runs on eight hits, three walks and they struck out 15.

Arkansas opened the scoring in the fourth on a Peyton Stovall sac fly, though it was about all the Diamond Hogs could do against LSU starter Paul Skenes, who gave up just two hits and three walks while striking out 12 in his seven innings of work.
