Arkansas Tech University robotics team ranked best in US, top 2 in world

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Arkansas Tech University was ranked the top college robotics team in the United States and second in the world, according to a news release.

The distinctions were earned at the Texas VEX U Tournament in Houston on Feb. 23 and 24.

ATU earned the honor on Feb. 23 after receiving their skills challenge score, the release said. They finished as runner-up in the head-to-head competition the following day, falling to Texas A&M University.

However, their performances in both competitions were enough to give them the top prize in Houston.

“We were so close to getting the triple crown of excellence, tournament champions and skills challenge champions, but we are still very happy,” Jacob Weidenfeller, ATU instructor of electrical engineering, said in the release.

ATU made it to the quarterfinal round at the 2023 edition of the competition and finished in the top 16.

Weidenfeller said the team is looking for scholarships to help cover the cost of competing in the 2024 world championship.
